I had a convoluted road to medicine. I've got a B.S. in mechanical engineering (B.S. is exactly right! :D ) and a masters in engineering management (which is sort of a MBA for engineers). But as Lisa has mentioned, it's not at all uncommon for engineers to become doctors. We had 3 in my medical school class. In some ways, they require similar problem solving skills. One field works with machines, the other works with people.

Donna - my dad's an orthopedic surgeon and he's probably used some of your daughter's devices. :) As part of my masters degree, I did some computer work modeling stress forces on an artificial hip so similar to what your daughter does/did probably.
