Andrea, if you use AA miles, JAL is a partner and you could use them for Tokyo-Osaka. It looks like you could use JAL for JFK-Osaka with a connection in Tokyo, if you are going straight through and not staying in Tokyo at all. AA allows you a stopover and an open jaw, which is perfect for us. We will go LAX-Tokyo, take a stopover for a few days to visit Grant's brother, then we plan to fly JAL from Tokyo-Osaka since it's basically "free" or included in our mileage award tickets. Then we will use the open jaw to fly from Hong Kong back to LAX.
