It's been too long since we've cruised, and after our Barcelona to FLL got cancelled, we decided to book this one. Looks like a Great Itinerary & Group!
So add us to the list!

Is anyone looking into doing an overnight in Cairo?

So you mean revisit that overnight we were going to do from Cairo to Alexandria? In this case it would be the reverse, Alexandria to Cairo, and the ship leaves later from Cairo, which would make the second day a little less hectic.

There is an all day, 12 hour tour from Alexandria shown on the website, that includes Sakaara, Memphis and Giza, but that is it. Longgggg day needless to say.

I heard that maybe Priscilla was considering trying to redo the overnight trip - Priscilla is that so??? What does everyone else think? Anyone willing to re contact George at Ramsea tours to see what we could come up with?

Yes, we're interested in the overnight trip, Alexandria to Cairo. We want to get some time at the Egyptian Museum as well as the Pyramids, etc. and that seems to be the best way. I hadn't raised the issue yet because I wanted to see what Regent will offer, but if it's $1,000 per person like for TUT, we would want to do privately organized touring.

I don't mind contacting George at Ramses tours. I'm a little buried this week, but next week I can gather some information.

We're booked on CLEO, in 878, and will be spending some time touring Cappadocia and Istanbul before taking the train back to Athens for the Mariner's Black Sea Odyssey departing Athens July 6 to Istanbul (again) July 16. Look forward to seeing y'all and enjoy cruising with Ngaire and Ken again!

We're interested in the overnight in Egypt, and perhaps one in Israel as well. Any ideas about that?

We're also looking for information on reliable hotels, tour guides, things to see in and around Istanbul, things and guides to avoid, etc. during our visit there June 29-July 4. We've tenatively booked Regent's post-cruise tour to Cappadocia, but it seems quite expensive for what you get, and drops us two full days before we need to get the overnight train to return to Athens and re-board the Mariner for our Black Sea cruise. Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Gotcha on the roll call.

We might stay an extra night or maybe two in Istanbul and I could use suggestions as well, and plan to do some research in my guide books to see if we want to stay, so agree any help or suggestions would be welcome. This is a new port for us.

Welcome, Count Florida! You are across the hall from us, so the neighborhood will be in good hands.

We're not planning an overnight in Israel at this point, but a touring company that I can recommend based on my experience in planning for TUT is Guided Tours Israel -- www.guidedtoursisrael.com. The person I dealt with was Alon, and he was very accommodating and great source of information. Since we didn't actually get to Israel on TUT I can't vouch for the on-the-ground service, but I'm betting it would be very good.

Got it!

LOL now I know who got that cabin. While I was on the phone with Regent booking myself, the agent said "Oh the best cabin available is 926" so I'm looking at the deck plan and we are chatting and then she said "oh while we were talking someone took 926". Too funny.

Heads up for those on CLEO who are planning on staying at the Grande Bretagne pre-cruise. Starwood / Grande Bretagne is reinstating their "peak" season award "pricing" which raises the "cost" of award nights from 20,000 points to 25,000 points effective 1/10/2011 (so if you are planning on staying here on points, book your awards prior to that date). See https://spgpromos.com/highseason/index.cfm?em=HighSeasonLP2010&starpointNavSelect=6 for the actual announcement.

We have booked our Egypt excursions, But wanted to explore an overnight excursion to avoid what appear to be some lengthy bus rides. I know there were some earlier posts regarding a private overhight trip. I contacted Ramses Tours (Mohy) with a general inquiry of their Overnight Program II on there website. He responded quite quickly with an overview of what was pretty much available online. The prices quoted are considerably less than the overnight program offered on TUT. They quoted :
5 stars hotel
Prices per Person
2-4 Persons 250 USD
5-8 Persons 220 USD
9-15 Persons 210
4 stars hotel
2-4 Persons 230 USD
5-8 Persons 200 USD
9-15 Persons 190 USD
We are interested in the Oberoi Mena House Hotel which adds $50 PP. This Hotel is right next to the Pyramids. There were a number of optional activities. I am looking to see if anybody is interested in sharing this trip. I would be glad to forward their email response to anybody who is interested. I checked out Ramses Tour on Trip Advisor and they had many positive comments. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Hi all -- It seemed time to move this thread up, with final payment approaching.

Is everyone still on? John and I are getting excited.

Michael, my response to your post is months late!!! We have toyed with the idea of a private overnight tour in Egypt but are leaning away from doing that now given the unrest.

Priscilla, We have also let this sit on the back burner while things sort themselves out in Egypt. We have taken no action on this tour. We may still try it but I plan to wait until the situation in Egypt is a little clearer before we undertake the private tour. The posts on the Trip Advisor forum go both ways regarding visiting Cairo, we'll see.

We're in 910.
Haven't looked at excursions until tonight.

WOndering if doing private tours would be better than theRegent excursions. In SE Asia we used private guides provided by Regent & it worked out well.

I just spent a day in Cairo. I didn't notice any problems that would make a cruise line want to cancel a port call.

They told us tourism was off by 70%. So I think they want to do everything possible to get the tourists back.

We did notice that Egypt is becoming more fundamentalist. You see many more women with head coverings and more men with beards. So who knows what might happen after the elections. But for now I think it's safe for tourism.

This was ordered before EGYPT was cancelled. Julie suggested we change the meaning of CLEO

Cruising in Luxury to Empires Ottoman
to
Cruising in Luxury Egypt Omitted

That gave me a giggle for the day. It is almost like CLEO is throwing her hands up in horror

"OH WELL"

Or the upper arm saying "COMING" and the lower arm saying "NOT COMING"

Hey CLEOites, only 5 weeks now. Thought maybe it was time to bump this up and get some excitement going.

Don't know about the rest of you, but we are getting excited and looking forward to seeing everyone. Since we are on the cruise prior, we won't be staying in Athens, but what is everyone else doing?

Looking forward to seeing everyone onboard on the 17th.

Docs came yesterday I think - they were sitting by our front door this morning.

When I saw Eugene's post about the Voyager's new propulsion problems I thought oh no, here we go again - but then remembered we're on the Mariner this time.

We arrive in Athens on the 16th around 5:30 PM so we are just staying at the Sofitel at the airport and getting picked up by Spiros at noon on the 17th.

"Where is everyone?" Rusting! There has been so much rain, with more to come, we're starting to develop web feet. Quack, quack.

But yes, we do have CLEO to look forward to and for that we are thankful. We've got our tours lined up, specialty dinner reservations made and have left most evenings open in order to just "wing" it and go with the flow, or just drop from exhaustion.

Israel is what we're hankering to see and we're bulging with anticipation and expectations. Shoot, just looked at the date. We leave a month from today..........Hooooooooooray!!!!!

Cheers! Ray & Penny

HaHa - Ray is right! If we haven't all been swept into Lake Erie by the floods, we will be in Athens a month from today!!!!

We are in Hawaii right now for Mark's conference then we go to Montreal for Memorial day weekend - so actually haven't thought about this trip much. We will arrive on 6/15 staying at GB (could switch to Arion though).

I am just hoping this trip goes well for all of you, especially those who got sent home from TUT! I loved the GB, but any pre-cruise hotel would be fine with me!

Peter, What a great trip for you and Mark.

We too will miss all our un-Tut friends, I know you'll have a great time on CLEO and this time I bet you actually leave the port. :app:

I hope we leave port too Marcie. We already know there is no Egypt, but lets hope the rest of the cruise goes as planned. Wish you were going to be with us, it just won't be the same without all of you who jumped to Kangaroo. that were originally onboard, but we will do our best.

Kristin - I just kept hoping and hoping that things might work and you and Greg would be able to join us, but realize with your move and his new job and all it probably wouldn't work. Sure wish though that you were joining us.

Peter - nice pre CLEO trip love Hawaii.

FedEx delivered docs today so we have done the "jig"

Biz Class, Butler, BG Hotel and transfers, lots of shipboard credit. Life is really good.

Can't wait to visit Israel and take lots of photos and video. Private guide assures me of a great 4 day all-encompassing tour.

Cheers! Ray

Woohoo, same here, although we don't have a 4 day private tour in Isreal, just doing ships excursions.

We are out of here two weeks from tomorrow for pre CLEO, and three days in Rome. Can't wait.

Happy dancing, everyone! We're looking forward to a great cruise. Hardly seems possible it is finally here .... and even earlier for you, JoAnn and Frank and Susan and Russ. You'll have the Mariner in good shape for us on June 17.

Leslie, I saw that same post about the Voyager and had that "not again" reaction too. Glad we are on the Mariner!

Ray, who is the guide for those 4 days in Israel?

We are doing similar cruise in Oct/Nov and am compiling a list of private guides to use which are highly recommended to us

TIA

Dick:

Here's the company that I am going to be using:

http://www.guidedtoursisrael.com/

I have had a lot of fun bantering with one of the company's employes, Alon, and I am most excited to be "guided" by them. I think we'll be bone tired by the end of the four days but it doesn't matter to me as I expect this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit Israel.

I will have a Blog going and expect I'll take a ton of photos and lots of video. Wow, I can't wait to get started!

Cheers! Ray
p.s.: Thanks to Priscilla on this board for letting me know about Guided Tours.

The packing has begun. We leave on the 3rd for pre CLEO, so we have two guest bedrooms full of clothes, suitcases, more clothes, shoes, etc, etc. Stacking stuff, taking stuff of the stacks, moving stuff around, trying to get everything into 3 checked bags for 22+ days, plus one carry on with basics in case luggage doesn't arrive with us,........whew......lots of re-doing. It will get done at some point, duh!!!

Starting to feel real and really starting to get excited.

Looking forward to dinner on Sunday June 6 with Russ and Susan and Andrea in Rome. Should be lots of fun and a great time.

Thanks Diane, we are excited too, for sure. Just ready for this trip to begin and see some of those things/places we missed on TUT or unTUT as it is now known. Disappointed we are again mssing Egypt, but better to be safe than sorry.

JoAnn, I hope you will have a wonderful time, sure has been many months since TUT to make it up!

I don't mind packing, it is the UNpacking part coming home I hate. So sorry you will be missing Egypt and the Pyramids, my main reason for booking TUT before, and I feel so badly for this country with their loss of tourism presently. For sure, they always bounce back and there will be another day no doubt.

Olivia - agree, hate the unpacking when the trip is over. This time, we will come home on July 1, unpack and repack for the beach on July 10, then will have to unpack again!!

Arlene - we too wish you were going to be there, we will miss you and Marc, but will see you in Oct on CANADA!

OK so Susan Hall emailed today and reminded me that two weeks from today we will be onboard for pre-CLEO, woooohoooo, need this one really badly.

Please let the volcanic eruption in Iceland not get that far to impact our flight to Rome, please, please, please.

Luckily we have a nonstop from IAD to Rome, so hope that will help.

What double elite qualifying special?

Lol Marc! No, on FUN we were talking about the pre-Cleo cruise. Russ & Susan said they wanted to do some Rome tours & since I've never really seen Rome I invited myself along. Arlene probably remembers when we were talking about it since she told us about the Scavi tour. I'm going to spend a few days in Florence & Verona first.

JoAnn, AA has a targeted double elite qualifying special for MA residents flying r/t BOS-LHR to compete with Delta. Best thing now is I can fly on BA metal, which is much nicer than AA, & earn AA miles.

Oh its AA, thought it was UA. I like too that we can now fly on BA from IAD to LHR and not have to go thru New York, Boston or Chicago. We are doing Regent air this time around, so are on UA. Thanks for the clarification Andrea.

So CLEOites, only three weeks from Friday and you will be boarding. Can't wait to see everyone.

We are in the last phases of packing. you know, taking stuff out, exchanging stuff for other stuff, trying to decide do we really need that, or worse, yes we need that and that and that.....hey all part of the deal. Actually have it amazingly under control, Frank is in even better shape than me, he is done packing except for one or two last minute laundry items next week. I am the one still switching out and adding, substracting and trying to figure it all out......but cannot wait to get this show on the road.

great, we are in 1002, so just around the corner and expect a big time party in your room!!! Nice! Love those suites, but just didn't want to put out additonal after doing the upgrade on the 7th.

We took the upgrade offer on the June 7 cruise to a PH, and thus she was able to move us to the same cabin on the 17th, so we don't have to switch now.

Unfortunately, have to remove us from the Roll Call.
A temporary medical issue has caused us to have to cancel.
Everything will be fine, but not in time to do this cruise.

Now you'll all have to just have extra fun for us!

I'm at the Parco dei Principe waiting for Russ & Susan to arrive. I've warmed Italy up for them as I've been here since Sunday. I spent a few days in Tuscany & visited Pisa, San Marino & Verona. Tomorrow we are visiting the Vatican, & Sunday/Monday we have a private guide to show us the sites. Looking forward to dinner with Frank & JoAnn on Monday night.

I fly home on Tuesday, but will be back in Rome on the 16th for my cruise on the Royal Caribbean Mariner!

I bet by now Andrea and Susan and Russ are together and having a grand time. As Susan mentioned, John and I had lunch with her and Russ before they headed to the airport for their overseas flight. It felt as if vacation had started for us too! We will travel with them vicariously for the next two weeks, then board the Mariner TWO WEEKS FROM TODAY! Can't wait.

JoAnn, safe travels to you and Frank, and we'll see you in a couple of weeks!

Arlene, Marcie, Joanna, Olivia -- Can't you somehow stow away and meet us onboard????? That's the one thing that would make this trip more wonderful.

...if only I had a deeper pocket, I would be right there with you! Have almost finished spring fix-ups at my house, now having to pay for them!

Inquiring minds want to know, what is going on pre-cruise with Russ and Susan, Joann and Frank. Andrea in Rome, and another cruise on RCL? confused

Anyway, everyone have fun, and keep in touch!

Arlene, my suitcase is big enough for you!

Olivia, Susan and Russ and JoAnn and Frank are on the 10-day Rome-Athens cruise before CLEO. I think Andrea has been traveling in Italy on her own and is meeting them in Rome. Don't know about Andrea's cruise.

Oh Pricsilla, how I wish I could be on CLEO with all of you. As a consolation though I do get to go to Denver with Marc where he is going for a week long conference. So I will get to see my sister and some other family. It isn't a cruise with all my buddies but at least I won't be sitting at home daydreaming about being with all of you.

Susan & Russ arrived safely in Rome & called me around 6 pm last night. It was so great to see them. I had walked around earlier in the day to try & find a place for dinner, so we ventured out. The restaurant didn't start serving until 7:30 so we stopped at a cafe for a bit. The restaurant was very good - Gaudi Pizzeria. We started with an appetizer of fried specialties - arancini, mozzarella, etc. Russ & I had a delicious pasta with ham & cheese & Susan had pizza. It was very good, but by the end of the meal Susan was fading fast. The little wine we had may have helped! We were back at the hotel around 9:15.

We are meeting this morning & having breakfast at the little cafe we found last night. Then we're off to the Vatican for the day. We have the Scavi tour that Arlene told us about which first got us interested, & this evening we have the Vatican After Dark tour. This is a small group tour that I had heard about which is suppposed to be amazing since you get to see everything without huge crowds of people around you. We will let you know if it's worth the $$!

Olivia - yes, I'm back to Rome on the 16th as I'm sailing on the RCL Mariner. It's a Seminar at Sea offered by NACTA, a travel agent organization that I joined. The cruise spends 2 days in Israel which was a big selling point, & the price was great. I'm on my own version of CLEO!

Hey! I didn't know any of you were doing a "pre-CLEO". Our best friends are on this cruise. Susan/Russ/JoAnn/Frank: hope you get to meet them - Scott & Shannon - he is very tall, silver and handsome; she is a drop-dead gorgeous brunette with piercing blue eyes. They are from Scottsdale. I am thinking they will spend a lot of time in the casino... :D

Regardless, we will be anxiously awaiting your seamail!!! :bv:

Bonjouno from Rome -

Frank and I arrived yesterday after an uneventful flight from Washington. Room wasn't ready so we headed over to the Campo di Fiori to the saturday market and some cappucino - didn't sleep much on the plane. Wandered around and by the time we got back around 12:30 our room was ready. Tried to nap, didn't work, but we rested, then headed back over the Campo di Fiori for a little pizza and walking around- Joanna we walked right by the little restaurant you took the tour group on B2B to fo lunch. Came back, showered and had some wine on our little terrace, then headed out for some walking and dineer, a great little place recommended by the hotel, Pierluigi, great dinner and wine, and lots of nice people to chat with. Finally dropped into bed around 11 and slept soundly until 8 this morning.

Had some breakfast and headed out to walk around the Jewish ghetto area, then across the river to Trastavere where we wandered around somemore. Our hotel is the Ponte Sisto, right at the Ponte Sisto bridge and across from Trastavere. Back at the hotel taking a break, we will go back to the Jewish ghetto for some lunch in awhile. Tonight we again have reservations at a place recommended by the hotel. Tomorrw is the Sistine Chapel and later we will meet Andrea, Russ and Susan for dinner.

Kristin - give your friends our name and we will try to hunt them down, in fact if you want try to email them our room number 1002 and tell them to give us a call and we will meet up for drinks.

More later. Ciao!

JoAnn, Strolling around Rome taking in the sights (and sites) and eating great food sounds like a wonderful way to begin a vacation.

Just had a great lunch in the Jewish Ghetto at Trattoria da Giggetto, shared several stuffed zucchini blossoms stuffed with cheese and anchovies and fried, one deep fried artichock heart and one piece of deep fried cod - oh gosh heart attack city, but soooooo yummy. Raining as we walked back and now rest time and another jacuzzi bath with wonderful "salt bath minerals" and maybe a short nap before dinner tonight.

Hi JoAnn,

I'm so envious, you're in my favorite city in the world. Funny that you're at the Ponte Sisto, we stayed there a few years ago and have also enjoyed dinner (and lunch) at Pierluigi(which is now our favorite rest in Rome). That's a great area.

Enjoy!!
