Well we got quite a shake up. It was felt from San Diego to Santa Barbara. I think of the LCTers , we may live the closest ?? We're about 6 miles from the epicenter in Chino Hills. It had 5.8 magnitude. No damage here at all. Medicines came flying out of the medicine cabinet. but nothing worse. I've heard from Denise as she's not too far away either and she sure felt it. Disneyland, schools, hotels, businesses have been evacuated. Our pets were sure nervous but they're fine now. Our land phone is out but the internet is fine.

Hope that all other LCTers and their families are SAFE !!

We were shaken pretty good and I am 45 miles from the epicenter. Downsized now to a 5.4. It was bumpy and then rolling here. All our office neighbors were outside.

Helen (Ms. Understood) lives right at the epicenter as does another couple friends I can't reach. No injuries being reported but some freeway damage being reported. Phones - landline and cell - are out. Books and stuff off store shelves.

Continual smaller aftershocks being reported.

Definitely felt it here in Burbank. My office building is on rollers so the sway seemed more pronounced. Some things fell off the bookcase in my office. We were evacuated but sent back inside after about 15 minutes. Cellular networks are jammed - I can't even get a text thru! Heading home in a bit to check things out.

Here is a link to the developing story.

EDIT to add: Everything seems okay at home - cats a little spooked but otherwise no damage. Our local ABC affiliate reports that there was an 800% spike in cell/telephone use within the 1/2 hour after the quake. Phone service is returning back to normal.

We're fine here north of LA. Glad everyone is ok. Nerves are shot! My daughter felt it in high rise in San Diego. It was such a long, wavy one! I was by the pool - a wave started forming in it. Strangest thing to see!...mercy.

KFWB is reporting that the authorities are asking people to stay off the telephones - both cell and landline.

Reporting in.

I am at work on the 2nd floor of the hotel I work for. Meeting attendees and guests quickly left their meeting and guestrooms to see what was happening. Our Executive staff was there at the ready, offering assurance that everything was OK.

Two of our engineers had just climbed a ladder to begin work on the A/C system located in the ceiling of our pre-function area. One of the engineers began to fall, because the shaking became so violent. He reached to secure himself from falling, grabbing onto the rim of the unit. The rim cut his hand very deeply. He was taken to the ER for treatment - 16 stiches.

Our Director of Catering received a call that some glass items broke free of his curio cabinet. Glass all over. He is leaving work shortly.

No idea what I will find when I get home. Hoping nothing of concern.

The quake seemed to last forever.

Hoping our SOCAL friends are safe. Thanks for checking back with me Michele and Marcie.

How do you explain this to the poor pets??

We are fine here. My office and my house are both in Diamond Bar.Computers fallen over, coffee flying out of cups all over the place!!! Oddly a bunch of wall tiles have come off the wall in our lobby. No phone service but the power stayed on. I went home to check on the dog and although my house is marginally closer to Chino Hills (we are the next town west)nothing at home worse than crooked pictures on the wall. It was pretty scary tho, closest one ever for me. Glad to hear everyone else is OK. This is the price we pay NOT to have to deal with hurricanes smiles

Glad to hear fellow So Cal LCTers are fine !!

Cal State Fullerton closed but will reopen tomorrow as will department stores that have damage (guessing probably broken glass). I felt several good size after shocks during the fist 1/2 hour but haven't felt anything since. I went to the Brea mall and it seemed very quiet with closed signs on various stores. The signs indicate that they'll reopen tomorrow so that's good.. My local grocery store was open and looked as it always does..

It's the first earthquake I've felt in 4 or 5 years so guess we were due.

Marcie ,my husband was on his way to the Brea Mall, thought he ran something over and then could not figure out why the fire dept was at Macys! We just walked into one of my attorneys offices (he left for court before the quake) and his photos are all over the floor, broken glass everywhere and I guess he had a cup of water on the desk which has now soaked all his paperwork! Yikes!

Helen,

Glad to hear all is well there. My friend in Norco had everything come out of kitchen cupboards.

In Century City, they closed the third floor of Bloomingdales because all the china and crystal fell of the shelves there. My friend was evacuated since she was having lunch there. Same in several other department stores. Frank picked up lunch today at Whole Foods and they did not have anything come down.

Anne,

I sent an email to Dena and Grant to make sure they were OK. They live extremely close to us and I would imagine they came through the quake OK. Hope to hear from them soon.

Just got home about a half hour ago from work. With the exception of one crooked picture on the wall, our home is safe and secure, thank goodness.

Yes, let's hope the aftershocks are minimal and gone quickly.

Checking in from the epicenter at Chino Hills. Everything was fine when I got home. Mom, husband, dogs and breakables.

Mom was the most rattled. She was shopping at Ulta when makeup and other items started flying off the shelves. Fortunately, no injuries and no damage.

I work in Corona and we evacuated our 2 mfg buildings. Lots of shaking. I was really surprised to find out it was Chino Hills.

Hope everyone is OK!

I am late checking in but we are fine. I am working odd hours this month so I haven't been home yet, but I'm sure all is fine there too.

I was driving to work at the time of the earthquake and didn't feel a thing.

I work at our county fairgrounds and the fair is in full swing now. Fortunately the earthquake occurred just before the fair opened at noon, but there was no damage here at all, and all the buildings, bleachers, and rides passed post-quake safety inspections with no problems. We had 40,000 people here today which is a good Tuesday and it didn't seem like the quake stopped anyone from doing what they had planned.

I haven't felt any aftershocks at all, so hopefully that was it!

It's 6:40 am and I am just reading about the earthquake here. With company visiting for a few days we never did get to see any news.

Just thankful you are all ok and that it wasn't too, too damaging.

You Californians are a hardy bunch!

Guess that is what is meant when you say"LCT Rocks"

I'm also glad to hear that all of of CA LCTer's are fine following yesterday's earthquake.

Denise, the engineer from your hotel is in my thoughts. I pray that his hand heals completely.

Thunderstorms, tornados and flooding are the natural disasters we're most prone to deal with here. Our former house was hit by lightening twice several years apart, dispelling a common myth. Homeowner's insurance took care of the minor damages.

I heard on our local news last night that only about 12% of all CA homeowners have earthquake insurance (we don't) and that there is a 15% deductible for those that do have it. $$$

So if you had $100,000 in damages, out of pocket with insurance is $15,000...they pay $85000. For about $750 in premium. In Northridge, I had $400,000 in damages and out of pocket was zero. Insurance paid for me to live elsewhere for 2 years, paid for rebuild my house, replace my broken furniture, china, and moving expenses back and forth. My Homeowner's association assessed each owner $50,000 and they paid that too. Coverages now aren't that good, but, still I would not want the risk. I lived 2 miles from the epicenter.

Wow Kathy, how fortunate you were! What was the $50 K assessment for, I'm curious.

Is it getting that in CA you can't get earthquake coverage, like flood or hurricane coverage in the south east?

I lived in a Condominium community and we had assessments to rebuild the common areas. Our deductible was very high and we had to pay for building upgrades and sheer walling the whole complex. Basically the whole community and bulidings were reconstructed. We have something called The California Earthquake Authority that guarantees some minimal coverages.

Well, I live in Boston and I have earthquake insurance! Ok, maybe that's because I lived in Santa Monica in the 80s and St. Louis in the 90s! (New Madrid fault, in case you don't know.)

Happy to read that everyone is ok!!! Although earthquakes generally never bothered me, I'm still glad I finished that project at Raytheon in Fullerton at the end of May.
