So many times, people on this board talk about dining places that they have in their cities that we don't have here. I was out in Vegas this weekend visiting my friend who lives out there. Some people on this board have mentioned Lawry's and we don't have one of those either, but I knew Vegas did, so she made reservations for us. While we were there, I was mentioning some of the other places that I remembered hearing about from this board -mostly, this In & Out Burger place. She said they have those, too! I could have had a In and Out burger! And then she told me they also had a Sonic! Next visit, I guess. We have places here like Hardee's and Burger King, but I have wished we had a Sonic for a long time. Maybe someday.

Our Hardee's just closed.
In fact they closed 4 of them in Eastern Montana.
Heard rumors that Sonic may be interested in the building. That would be great.

We have Taco Bells but most people prefer Taco John's as they are out of Cheyenne Wyoming.

Trish, Sonic's shakes are great. The pineapple is my fav. Randy, my SO, loves their Ched 'R' Peppers® ... so high in fat, but who cares!! I'm waiting for my first trip to In & Out, too.

Jean, The Sonic's have great burgers, but my favorite item is a cherry limeade drink. I used to date a guy who was from Missouri and that was where I had my first Sonic and fell in love. Now I only get Sonic when we visit my SIL in Tulsa.

We have both Taco Bell's and Taco John's in MN.
I'm always up for a good burger. There was a place in the Mirage that had great burgers called Stackers. It was $19, but I could have eaten one every day.

Who has a Shake and Steak? Their commercials always look so good!

Stean and Shake - Atlanta has one plus they are in FLA, probably other locations that I don't know about. Love their shakes!

We have them in Jax - had them in Orlando in the 60's -

We have Steak and Shake in Texas. There isn't one real close to our house so haven't tried it, but would like to. We have a Sonic a few blocks away--love their Chili Dogs.

While we are talking about fast food, even though they don't have burgers, I love Long John Silvers! I don't eat fast food more than a few times a year but when I do, I just love LJS!! I could be happy with just an order of the "crumblies" (batter that falls off the fish and chicken, lol!)

Hmmm...I wonder if the DJ's from our local radio station (WDVE) read LCT??? They had this EXACT conversation this morning...wishing that Pittsburgh had an In and Out and a Sonic. One of the DJ's felt that the Hardees burger was the best...the others who had eaten at In and Out felt that theirs were the best!

There was also an article in the Fort Worth Star Telegram this morning by the New York Times food editor. He went across the country trying and comparing fast food. Of the top ten: Varsity in Georgia has the best chili dogs and he said Sonic has the best potato item (Tots). But his choice for best hamburger is the "Butterburger" from a small Wisconsin chain called Culvers--(ooh, that sounds lethal to me). He also liked the Whataburger (a chain in Texas that's my personal favorite), but didn't have too much positive to say about In & Out Burgers--he thought the vegetables (lettuce, tomato, onions, etc) on it overpower the burger. Don't know since I've never had one. Any thoughts?

Karen, my first "real" job was at Long John Silvers - or LoJos as I like to call it. Anytime I needed a job (during the crazy drinking years) I could always get hired at LJS. I've worked at about 5 different ones in Ohio and Kentucky!

The Sonics around here are okay, nothing to write home about (don't like the "tater tots" but LOVE the onion rings). Steak n' Shake has wonderful chili mac, but their burgers are greasy.

I'd love to try the In and Out sometime.

The Hardees around here closed years ago.

Wow Marcie, I guess you have everything, including the palm trees! That's interesting Sheri that your radio station is having the same conversation. We really do have a ton of dining options here, but you always want what you don't have, don't you? I'm pretty sure I would never pick a Hardee's to stop at. I haven't eaten one in years. Peggy, we have Culver's here. You have to stop at one when you get a chance. I don't know that I agree that it would be the best burger you've ever had, but they ARE good. I insist on their fries, onion rings and ice cream.

Now, I also have to say that Dave bbq's burgers that deserve a hurrah although we don't eat them very healthy. Ours include cheese, mayo and sauteed onions. Yum. Peggy, the Varsity - OH YES! But, sort of greasy food. My favorite is a great steak (hamburger with chili) and a PC (chocolate milk with ice). They also have good drinks called "frosted orange," an orangeade with ice cream. Back in the days, the Varsity was a drive-in located near Ga Tech in downtown Atlanta (still there). We'd go with a date, or hang out, sit in the car with the tray out the window and flirt! Now, the Varsity has several locations in Atlanta and Athens but I don't know how many of them are drive-ins. Oh, the onion rings are fantastic - but greasy. There is a theme here :) !

Editing to say I don't agree with NY Times critique of In and Out. I think the freshness of the lettuce, tomatoe and onion is what makes the burger. I always ask for my onions to be grilled - then the hamburger is really good!

Yes, the grilled onions is key. Or asking for it "Animal Style" which also works for me.

Marc loves the "mini" bannana splits at Sonic. THey are so cute. THey are exactly like your average (?) bannana split except they are only about 2 inches long. Perfect size for a "little" desert.

Hiro and I are back from last month's Oceania Regatta Istanbul - Venice. We had a really fun time, and I've said one or two things about it over on the "O" board.

This is an interesting thread, so let me cluck in with my opinions.

Lawry's Tam O'Shanter was the first of the Lawry's Prime Rib restaurants opened in the Atwater - Glendale neighborhood of Los Angeles circa 1921. My manufacturing plant is just a mile away from the "Tam" and it's our virtual lunchtime hangout. I invite anyone who's in the hood to stop by for a mouthfull of Los Angeles restaurant history. The prices are about 20% less than others in the chain. Naturally, I suggest the Prime Rib!

Just had my first In-n-Out Burger - now I know what all the fuss is about - it was VERY good! I did forego the "special sauce" they put on it. I like my ketchup!

The places I do miss that we had back in Florida were Bahama Breeze and Carabba's. Guess you can't have it all!

Ooooh, Carabba's is yummy! There's one in Peabody, which makes it a bit of a trek, but now I'll have to see about going sometime soon.

Did you know Carrabba, Outback, Bonefish Grill, Flemmings and Roys are all part of the same chain? They started in Tampa so we've got'em all - pretty darn good food!

But no In 'N Out for us :(

Here in Dallas we have Carrabba's, Outback, Bahama Breeze, and we also have Lawry's. We also have all a plethora of TexMex Restaurants.

I would give all of it up though to have In-N-Out Burger's here, oh and Trader Joe's for my Two Buck Chuck!

Don, we like Chuy's, a TexMex place that's mostly in Texas. We've been there in Arlington and North Dallas. We got hooked on it when there was one just up the street from us in Tustin. It didn't last too long here and now it is a Lone Star Steakhouse. (I guess they really think us Tustin folks take to Texas cookin'!) So when we're in Texas, we go for a Chuy's fix. I like Spring Creek BBQ too, when in Texas.
