2 Rescued After Fall From Cruise Ship

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - A man and woman fell overboard from a cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico early Sunday, but both were rescued after a four-hour search and appeared to be in good condition, a cruise line spokeswoman said.

The 22-year-old man and 20-year-old woman fell 50 to 60 feet from a cabin balcony, said Julie Benson, spokeswoman for Princess Cruises.

She said the cruise line did not know how they fell overboard. Their ship, Princess Cruise's Grand Princess, was about 150 miles off the coast of Galveston, Texas, at the time.

The captain turned the ship around after friends of the man and woman notified the crew at about 1:30 a.m. CDT that they had gone overboard, Benson said. The ship's crew used high-powered spotlights and rescue boats in the search. One passenger was rescued by the ship's boats at 5:30 a.m. and the other at 6 a.m., according to a statement by the cruise line.

The search was aided by the Coast Guard, said Lt. j.g. Jillian Lamb at the District 8 Command Center. A nearby cruise ship also offered assistance, she said.

The man and woman, whom the cruise line declined to name, were examined by the ship's medical staff.

"They appear to be in satisfactory condition and we hope that no further medical attention will be needed," Benson said.

Grand Princess was carrying 2,783 passengers on a seven-day tour of the western Caribbean.

It kind of makes you wonder how BOTH of them fell overboard???

Well, my theory would be they were completly intoxicated, sitting on the rail of their balcony cabin and lost their balance. Unless something more nefarious is at play.

They fell over at between 2-3am...me thinks they were possibly a wee bit inebriated or else it was quite a lover's tiff? The fact that their friends new about it in the middle of the night, sounds like a party atmosphere...

I'm glad they were found and appear to be in good shape.

Perhaps they were just trying to escape the crowds!

This is just crazy! You know there had to be liquor involved in this. They are lucky to be alive and they probably inconvenienced hundreds of other passengers.

I am really surprised it doesn't happen more often. With all the drinking and private balconies. I could see where it wouldn't be too difficult to fall over the side. They are lucky to be alive. Must of been good swimmers and the water probably sobered them up FAST!

On CruiseCritic, on the Carnival boards, there is a thread reviewing the cruise on which the man fell overboard two weeks ago. That cruise also included the midshipmen from the Naval Academy that supposedly behaved badly, including the midshipman who allegedly spent the entire cruise wearing only a speedo, a cowboy hat, and boots. The account is hilarious.

How could I ever doubt those that claimed a Carnival cruise could be "an elegant experience?"

He was nude because he dived in and did not jump in. (worn elastic !!)

Actually according to the news last night they had pants on and removed them to use as a floatation device in the water. :ohmy:

Someone that was on this cruise was interviewed and said the couple "had a few drinks"! ;)

I hope, if it was a stunt, that they were heavily fined for inconveniencing the Coast Guard and Princess.

I saw on TV an interview with some passengers getting off Saturday, and one lady said that she heard they were playing "Titanic" and the woman was standing on a chair at the balcony rail and fell over and he went in after her.
