Please accept our condolences. I will put a memorial up at www.rainbowbridge.com

Farewell Friend, yet not farewell.
where I go, ye too, shall dwell.
I am gone, before your face,
a moments time a little space.
when ye have gone where I have stepped,
ye will wonder, why ye wept.

Hi Andi and Doug--

There's nothing I can write that would convey my sense of my understanding of what you are going through, only that I've lost two "best friends" (golden retrievers)) over the last five years.
One, and a very special friend, I lost through a prolonged and debilitating decline due to lymphoma.

None of us (hopefully) are just pet "owners", we are all "custodians" for our special friends. There is a difference...

Best regards to you, Doug, and Maggie--
Bill

Dear Andrea and Doug:

Penny and I have been watching this thread and we're so sorry your good buddy has passed on,

For us, we only knew Maggie as your happy, healthy companion with a bright, shiny coat and a happy disposition. Man, could she ever run those stairs and made for a lively doorbell as well as a tail wagging cheerful greeter.

I have a smile on my face when I think of her and always will. There's a lot to be said for that kind of a remembrance.

In the meantime, teary smiles and a few weeps are in order for you guys.

Ray & Penny

My heart goes out to you, and I am crying with you. It is so heartbreaking to lose a doggy child/friend. As it has been said, her ordeal is over, and she is bringing joy to others in a better place.

Andi and Doug - Oh we are so sorry to hear of your loss. We have been there and know that it is never easy - but hopefully you will be comforted by the fact that you both gave her such a wonderful home, life and so much love, and that she is no longer suffering or struggling.

Michele says it beautifully, "your sweet angel touched us all so much". Maggie really did touch all of us.

Hugs to both of you    many, many times over.

Andi & Doug, sincerest condolences, below are some pet words of wisdom to cheer us all up:

The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue.
-Anonymous

Don't accept your dog's admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful.
-Ann Landers

If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.
-Will Rogers

There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face.
-Ben Williams

A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.
-Josh Billings

The average dog is a nicer person than the average person.
-Andy Rooney

We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made.
-M. Acklam

Dogs love their friends and bite their enemies, quite unlike people, who are incapable of pure love and always have to mix love and hate.
-Sigmund Freud

I wonder if other dogs think poodles are members of a weird religious cult.
-Rita Rudner

A dog teaches a boy fidelity, perseverance, and to turn around three times before lying down.
-Robert Benchley

Anybody who doesn't know what soap tastes like never washed a dog.
-Franklin P. Jones

If I have any beliefs about immortality, it is that certain dogs I have known will go to heaven, and very, very few persons.
-James Thurber

If your dog is fat, you aren't getting enough exercise.
-Unknown

My dog is worried about the economy because Alpo is up to $3.00 a can. That's almost $21.00 in dog money.
-Joe Weinstein

Ever consider what our dogs must think of us? I mean, here we come back from a grocery store with the most amazing haul -- chicken, pork, half a cow. They must think we're the greatest hunters on earth!
-Anne Tyler

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.
-Robert A. Heinlein

If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you; that is the principal difference between a dog and a man.
-Mark Twain

You can say any foolish thing to a dog, and the dog will give you a look that says, 'Wow, you're right! I never would've thought of that!'
- Dave Barry

Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.
-Roger Caras

If you think dogs can't count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then give him only two of them.
-Phil Pastoret

My goal in life is to be as good of a person my dog already thinks I am.

I am so sorry. When I lost my Baka too long ago, I bought a children's book called "Dog Heaven", which talks of a loved dog running, running, running.... I still look at it when I get wistful, with four year old Spunky sitting next to me on the bed.

Andi & Doug. I am so sorry for your loss. I came across this and thought it appropriate to share.

***

From time to time, people tell me,
"lighten up, it's just a dog,"
or, "that's a lot of money for just a dog."
They don't understand the distance traveled,
the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog."

Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog." Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted. Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog," and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it's "just a dog,"
t hen you will probably understand phases like
"just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise."

"Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. "Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person. Because of "just a dog" I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future.

So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. "Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog" but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a man." So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog." just smile, because they "just don't understand."

Robert - what a wonderful post.

Doug and Andi - we have been in your shoes and know that we will again, maybe in the not too distant future. I can only hope that you have found comfort and love in the LCT postings, as well as Robert's and ColonelWes, and Kathy's special postings. Know that we are all there and sending our love and support.  our pets are so wonderful and it is truly so hard to lose them. But Maggie had such a wonderful life, with such a wonderful "mommy and daddy" and I bet if you could ask her, she would say that her life was the best and she knew that she was truly loved.
