Jackie! Name your price! One 14 yr. old dachshund (with daily girlfriend visitation privileges & emergency visits to the vets) PLUS a re-model in process. All the privacy you would want, 'cept for the daily cast of thousands working on the house.....like I said, "Name your price!" :nw: :nw:

Dang, maybe I should start a house sitting for LCT career! I would have stipulations though, like no New England in the winter sittings ;)

We are going to ask the Regent Concierge service to see if we can leave the second evening of the port call at Tianjin (for Beijing) on the Z19 deluxe train - scheduled to depart from Beijing at 20:28 and arrive Xian the next morning at 7:58. As there are no Z-class trains (express with deluxe accommodations) from Xian to Shanghai, we will plan to fly that leg. Here is the "Train travel in China - a beginner's guide" description:

This superb train has top-quality brand-new air-conditioned sleeping-cars, far superior to any flight and saves time over flying, too. This train is soft class only (no hard class) with 4-berth ordinary soft class sleepers, 2-berth deluxe soft class sleepers with private toilet, restaurant car (with menu in Chinese and English, beer a reasonable RMB15, the crispy fried prawns are recommended..!) and bar. It is reported that the on-board staff are helpful and speak some English, and the berths are even fitted with small TV screens..!

Thus, we would spend Tuesday night Oct 2 on the train, then two full days and nights in Xian, before flying from Xian to Shanghai Friday morning Oct 5 to rejoin the ship, which is scheduled to dock there at 7AM that morning.

Any other suggestions or requests, please post here or e-mail this week (address in profile); we leave for the Inaugural President’s Mediterranean and Society Summit Reunion cruises early next Monday morning!

We will post what we learn either from the ship or upon our return (>Mon, Nov 20th).

[size=8]Too Many To List - 416 days & counting on Radisson/Regent, and 150+ days on 8 other lines, with one cruise booked next month on the Mariner, Miami to Honolulu 22 days

I think flights open tomorrow if you want to leave on 9/22. Still haven't figured out if I'm going to use miles or just go through Regent.

Excellent idea Marc! If I use miles I think it's easier to fly into NRT and then I'd take the train too.

Andrea, you might want to investigate flying directly into Osaka; especially if you use Star Alliance. I have heard that the connections are good. Fooling with NRT and two trains might, from what I have heard, not be worth it. Check out the Japan forum on FlyerTalk.

Thanks Marc...I will check on FlyerTalk. My miles are with AA, but United does seem to have the best flights from Boston to Osaka and back from Hong Kong. If I have to pay, I'll pay. C'est la vie!

I checked with United today & it's still 2 days before we can book flights.

LOL! Gary was reading up on the Muscat-Monte Carlo leg of the World Cruise, then talked himself into PANDA (with a lot of help from Ngaire).

Mine is not to question why; just book it! I am VERY MUCH looking forward to cruising with all of you in Asia.

Marc & Arlene, you'll have room for all of us visiting Tokyo pre-cruise? :D

Cheers, Anne

Anne, they will be raring at the bit to get OUT of Tokyo by that time! We need to plan Kyoto, right? I've heard that is the "real" Japan city to visit!

Great news that Anne and Gary will be joining the fun!

Andrea, if you use AA miles, JAL is a partner and you could use them for Tokyo-Osaka. It looks like you could use JAL for JFK-Osaka with a connection in Tokyo, if you are going straight through and not staying in Tokyo at all. AA allows you a stopover and an open jaw, which is perfect for us. We will go LAX-Tokyo, take a stopover for a few days to visit Grant's brother, then we plan to fly JAL from Tokyo-Osaka since it's basically "free" or included in our mileage award tickets. Then we will use the open jaw to fly from Hong Kong back to LAX.

Andrea - the trains are not really set up to handle luggage all that well unless you can manage it all by yourself - there is no porter or conductor that will load the luggage for you. I agree with Marc - best to fly directly to Osaka.

Betty .. I tried Seward to Osaka with no success. It was, however, part of the process that got us to PANDA.

Thanks to ALL of you for helping get us on to this cruise! Gary's psyched, and that's important to me. Let's get a whole lot of shakin' going on!!

Cheers, Anne

Masaki knows I don't travel lightly and my sherpa won't be with me, so I would be better off flying into Osaka.

I was able to book BOS to NRT this morning, and I'll have to call back tomorrow to see if they can add the portion to Osaka because it hasn't been loaded into the system yet. I'm planning on arriving in Osaka on 9/22.

I do not want to go so far without seeing Tokyo, but like some others, we have too much luggage to use the train to get to Osaka. How would it be to fly to Osaka with the luggage, and then leave it at a hotel and take the train to Tokyo for an overnight there? Does anyone know how long the train would take?

Another idea is to have our luggage shipped to Osaka, and then just fly with a small bag to Tokyo and take the train to Osaka.

Any other ideas? It would be nice if Regent offers a pre-cruise Japan tour, but it does not seem that will happen.

They have baggage shippers right in the airport at Narita. I think it makes sense to land in Tokyo, ship most of your bags to Osaka (either hotel where you will be staying or ship's representative) and then take the Limousine Bus into your Tokyo Hotel. When it is time to go to Osaka, just take a cab to train station and then catch bullet train to Osaka.

Another option is to take all of your bags on limousine bus to hotel (we will see what this is like with six suitcases next week) and then ship from hotel day before you depart for Osaka.

Or take all the bags to the hotel in Tokyo. Spend time in Tokyo and then FLY from Tokyo to Osaka in time to catch the ship or a night or two early if you want to see Osaka.

It is the train that cant handle the bags so just fly. I looked it up on the web flights all time to Osaka about $180 per person. That is what I would do. Then your bags are with you all the time.

I saw this pre-cruise option on Regent site. I have no idea on the cost. One think I am confident of, though, is that you won't have to worry about the bags. I am also pretty confident you would be able to add yet another day in Tokyo.

Quote
Tokyo and Kyoto
4 Nights program, offered in conjunction with embarkation.
Kyoto is Japan's cultural hub, and the very essence of traditional Japanese life. The futuristic Bullet Train, or Shinkansen, will whisk you away from modern-day Tokyo to historic Kyoto, where you'll step back 600 years into Japan's Classic Period. This ancient artistic, cultural and religious capital features 1,600 Buddhist temples, 400 Shinto shrines, a trio of palaces, dozens of perfectly-sculpted gardens, and scores of fascinating museums. A visit to Mount Fuji includes a drive up to the 5th station for spectacular views. Experience modern Japan during your full-day tour of Tokyo.
Daily Details
Day 1 Upon arrival at theTokyo International Airport, you will be met outside the customs hall and transferred to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day and evening at your leisure. Overnight at the Imperial Hotel - Tokyo.
Day 2 After breakfast at the hotel, begin a day of sightseeing in Tokyo. In addition to the highlights of the city, you will visit the Meiji Shrine, a Shinto shrine dedicated to the divine souls of Emperor Meiji and his consort, Emperor Shoken. Continue on to the Imperial Place Plaza, from which you can view the two bridges that form an entrance to the inner palace grounds. The stone bridge in front is called Eyeglass Bridge, or Meganebashi. The bridge in the rear, formerly a wooden bridge with two levels, is named Double Bridge, or Nijubashi. The palace buildings and inner gardens are not open to the public. A visit to the Tokyo Tower Observatory offers a bird's-eye view of this modern metropolis, while a ride on a rickshaw at Asakusa will give you a feel for Tokyo's historic period. A stop will be made for lunch at a local restaurant. Spend the evening at your leisure. Overnight at the Imperial Hotel - Tokyo.
Day 3 After breakfast at the hotel, you will depart for the drive to Mt. Fuji-Hakone National Park. Enjoy a two-hour drive to Lake Kawaguchi via the Chuo Expressway, then visit the fifth station of Mt. Fuji for panoramic views over this scenic area. Following lunch at a local restaurant, you'll proceed to Hakone for a boat cruise on Lake Ashi for more scenic views of Mt. Fuji (weather permitting). Afterward, drive through the Owakudani Valley on your way to the Odawara Station, where you'll board the JR Super express bullet train to Kyoto. Upon arrival in Kyoto, transfer to your hotel. Spend the evening at your leisure. Overnight at the Westin Miyako Hotel - Kyoto.
Day 4 After breakfast at the hotel, you will begin your day of sightseeing in Kyoto. Your city tour includes visits to the Golden Pavilion at Kinkakuji Temple, a Zen temple formally known as Rokuonji, and dating back to 1397. The present building was erected in 1955 after a fanatical monk burned the pavilion. Next, you will proceed to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nijo Castle, residence of the founder of the Edo Shogunate. Complete your immersion into Kyoto tradition with two Japanese cultural experiences, calligraphy and origami. Lunch at a local restaurant is included. Spend the evening at your leisure. Overnight stay at the Westin Miyako Hotel - Kyoto.
Day 5 After breakfast at the hotel, you will spend your morning sightseeing in Osaka, including visits to the 16th-century Osaka Castle and Shiten-nouji Temple. The Buddhist Temple is typical of the Asuka Period, and was built by Shotoku Taishi 1,400 years ago. Following lunch at a local restaurant, transfer to the Osaka Tempo-zan Port and your waiting cruiseship.

Notes
Program includes: Two nights at the Westin Miyako - Kyoto, Two nights at the Imperial Hotel - Tokyo, Half-day orientation tour of Osaka, Full-day tour of Kyoto, Full-day tour of Tokyo, Visit to Mount Fuji and lake cruise, Transfer between Odawara and Kyoto by Bullet Train, Breakfast daily, Three lunches, Transfers as applicable. Guests booking this program as a PRE cruise tour will fly into Tokyo. The official hotel check-in time is 3 p.m. and check-out is 11 a.m. To ensure early check-in, you have the option of purchasing hotel accommodations for an extra night. Late check-out may be arranged and paid directly to the hotel on a space availability basis. Your hotel stay includes breakfast, tax, service charges and luggage handling.

Marc, we did Tokyo to Hong Kong on last Fall's Grand Pacific Tour, which is very similar to PANDA. Prior to the Mariner, we did this trip (our TA set it up). The Imperial Hotel was one of the best hotels we have ever stayed at in the World. The Bullet Train to Kyoto was fun and the shrines and temples in Kyoto were awesome. The Westin Miyako was very nice also. If you have the chance (and $$$) to do this trip before boarding in Osaka, you will love it. Linda & Larry

Marc,
Thanks for finding the Tokyo/Kyoto pre-cruise tour. I hunted for pre-cruise tours on the website several times but never saw it. It sounds very good and I know Regent does a great job with their pre-cruise tours.

I called Regent this morning to see what I could find out about the Tokyo/Kyoto 4-day pre-cruise. Of course, they didn't have 2007 pricing yet for the packages and excursions, but they did tell me what the 2006 pricing was. I was told the package was called Tokyo/Kyoto Discovery this year, and the cost was $3520 per person.
