BTW, I transferred 21K SW points for 26K miles in our Aadvantage account. Glad I heard about the 5K bonuse here on LCT. It was just enough to get us the miles we needed. :lct:

Hate to interrupt this embroidery thread for this sew-sew news, but I'm pleased to report we finally got a decent airfare DFW to Nice on American...and an upgrade to Business Class. I had to buy a round trip ticket since the one-way was nearly twice as much--I'll just toss the return unless I can figure out a way to get some sort of credit for it. We also got a decent one-way fare($149)from FLL back to DFW.

Great news. So you are good to go! Is it a direct flight or do you connect thru London?

We have to go through Boston, then London :( . The direct flight from DFW to London goes to Gatwick and the flights to Nice go out of Heathrow. I'd rather connect in Boston (not too bad, no long walks, etc. involved) than change airports in London.

What flight are you taking from FLL to DFW? We are on the 12:30 flight, which stops in DFW and then connects to SNA, on AA.

Denise, I booked the 11:00 flight out of FLL. We'll probably get to the airport around nine and that airport isn't the greatest to sit around in. I booked the tickets by calling the AA Platinum desk because I wanted to get the upgrade, but there's some $688 fares on the website and I got the website price (actually a few dollars less). I did book the one way FLL tickets online.

Booking the air causes me more angst than anything when planning a trip, and when done, I breathe a big sigh of relief. At least you can have great anticipation about the ports and excursions. Air....you already know it is NOT going to be fun!

Congratulations on booking the flights home - just in case -are there other flights from FLL to DFW that day?

When we were in FLL in December, they did not start disembarking passengers until later than usual - we were not at the airport until after 10, if I recall correctly, but we had a 5ish flight booked and got on a 12:30.

There's a 12:30 from FLL to DFW. That's we we're booked on. We specifically booked a later flight just in case of delays.

I did book at 11:00--let's just hope there's no delays. FLL isn't that big an airport, so even if we get there after 10, we'll still be OK. Cathy, American has quite a few flights out of FLL either to DFW or Chicago (ORD)-- The flights to DFW are at 11, 12:30, 2:00, 4:30, 6:00, 8:00 and 9:00. Theres also two or three flights before 11.

I am sure you'll be fine and it looks like there are the alternatives.

Congrats, Peggy! Now that your air is settled you can breathe a sigh of relief. As Denise mentioned, she emailed me after you posted, and I'm envious of you. I've been checking and rechecking air recently, and I find the $699 fares, but when taxes are added they come to roughly $870. When the FLL-DFW flight is added, it's about the same as RSSC air, which includes transfers. So I haven't actually booked anything yet. Because of the Heathrow-Gatwick problem you mentioned, my preferred itinerary would be the Dallas-Zurich non-stop, followed by Zurich to Nice on Swiss Air. But you can't even get this itinerary online at aa.come (Swiss Air isn't a partner), although on the phone with AA it was the same price as on Travelocity -- again around $870 like the 2-stop itineraries the AA website gives us. Sigh. What to do?????

A question for you seasoned travelers: Since we probably will have to buy a round-trip ticket and toss the return, is there any best date to schedule the return (other than the cheapest)? I'm thinking maybe schedule it for the day after we return home, in case the airline calls. Would that ever happen? I don't want our house/petsitter or our emergency contacts to get a call and get all worried, if we were still traveling on the date we didn't show up for our scheduled flight.

Just tell your Dogsitter. We call home everyday we are away. Also, I give the airlines my cell phone number (I have a GSM phone so I can receive calls while I am away)

Kathy, I call home lots too with my GSM phone. I guess if I alerted the dogsitter, she wouldn't worry. But she also wouldn't know what to tell the airline. I thought it might be best to avoid the whole issue so she didn't get yelled at by some airline employee. :eek:

I just have my dogsitter say she will take a message and try to reach me. But, I have to say I have a really terrific lady who has been with me many years and is very sharp. I really missed her last year when we were in Tahiti and on WAVE and she was not dog sitting. We had a dog sitter who did a terrible job. I actually made my assistant call my house twice a day and then report in. I think my dogs were okay but when I found out she wasn't sitting by herself, that was it. My neighbor and my cleaning lady "told" on her.

Priscilla, not sure what you are trying to accomplish, saving money or being able to use miles either for award travel or upgrade. If I want to save money, I just cost it out and figure what the transfers will be. Reason I go on my own is for upgrades using miles, but that is where my angst comes in. I want biz class, but so hard to get on award travel, and have to pay a lot more on paid tickets plus points to get it.

But if you get the air with Regent, would you need to fly in the same day of the cruise in whatever flights they choose? Or would you need to get a deviation ( at extra cost)?

Regarding the return date, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Pick one that makes the price of the ticket the lowest. I am sure they have no shows all the time and I don't think they waste time calling them to see what happened. Well , at least that has been our experience. Either I or DH have been "no shows" several times, one time with an award ticket. Never got a phone call or anything.

OH so happy for your info Maria - I erased thinking I was encouraging bad airline behavior by encouraging "creative" bookings :D :D
