This is from the August 5, Washington Post. I had never known this before, so I thought it might be of interest:

Members of AARP now receive an 18 percent discount on MedjetAssist's emergency medical air evacuation program. Various plans are available, including annual memberships and short-term coverage. For example, an annual family membership for a couple and up to five children is $287 (normally $350). The company provides medically equipped and staffed aircraft that fly travelers hospitalized more than 150 miles from home to the hospital of their choice. Info: 866-809-4061, http://www.medjetassist.com/aarp

Thanks for the info, Eugene. We'll be purchasing a year's coverage right before LAMB (which will also take care of ROAR II.) Didn't know about the AARP discount. I like "geezer" benefits :app: .

Thanks
I was not aware of it
Ever since we used it a few years ago to get Marty home from a cruise we always purchase it.

Funny,

I just read this in the latest issue of the AARP magazine. I used to just toss them, but since returning from FJORDS sick as a dog, I've read through six months worth of stashed magazines.

I learned this mag is not only a good read, but has great info. Boy, is that not worth the $12.50, or whatever it is to belong to AARP!??!

In my experience if you are at least 49 1/2 you will start getting mail from AARP. When I first started receiving the mail I thought, "How rude -- I'm not even 50 yet!" From then on I just tossed it out but now I think maybe I should open it up and see what I've been missing. Hate to be throwing money in the trash. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Does anyone have any AARP tips on special, not to miss, deals?

Thanks for pointing out the medjet deal!

We get our car insurance through AARP - this saved us a lot when I switched a number of years ago - I haven't made any comparisons lately, but I think we saved around $200 per car.

Car, home and personal umbrella insurance through AARP for us. Like Leslie said, we saved money.

One night of discount on a hotel will usually "pay" for the $12 year membership. I had let mine lapse ( joined at 50 lapsed at 51) and when a hotel I was booking in Texas for 4 nights had an $11 per night lower AARP rate, I reupped. Note: My husband is 3 yrs younger than me and is a complimentary member because I am. ( He wasn't thrilled with being a senior before his time, but ? :D Since he has to hang around with an old lady, might as well get the benefits!

I should look into joining AARP I guess. We get stuff in the mail and I just toss it with all the other junk mail! By now we're probably off their mailing list.

I think in my case, they're getting me confused with my father - my father's first name is Masao and I'm Masaki so it wouldn't be the first time that I've been mistaken for my father on a mailing list. I'd hate to think that they think I qualify for AARP at 38. :)
