Posted now on the Regent website:

What is the dress code onboard the ships?

Attire ranges from Casual to Formal Optional. Casual wear is appropriate for daytime onboard or ashore, and consists of resort-style outfits. Casual wear, including shorts and jeans, is not appropriate after 6:00 pm, with the exception of the final evening of the cruise. On the night prior to disembarkation, guests may need to pack their luggage early due to morning flights the next day. With this in mind on the last night of every voyage we will relax the dress code for dinner to Casual.

Also, on cruise critic a poster now on board the Mariner said the Hostess in the new venue, Setti Mari told him after he saw three men in jeans at dinner, that they jeans are OK as they are promoting a more casual atmosphere.

Within the hour asked Mark Conroy about jeans in Setti Mari, his reply:

From: "Mark Conroy"
To: Colonelretwes
Sent: Wednesday, July 18, 2012 5:36:59 PM
Subject: RE: thanks

We don’t promote it that way but I think jeans are ok there it was always the one very casual venue.

I don't think I will be wearing jeans or shorts on the last night or in Sette Mari. I was one of the few who liked formal dress nights but now it seems to be the opposite direction with the dress code. Oh well, I guess as long as I like what Mark is wearing, that's all that counts wink

Dress jeans have never bothered me; shorts I do not like especially in Prime 7 or Compass Rose.

I noticed that Taj Mahal has changed from all casual to two "formal optional" nights. I hope our group decides to forego the "formal" wear.

What are dress jeans? Like Dockers made of jean material?

Dress jeans are $200 designer jeans versus casual jeans which are under $.100. You have to stare at peopke's butts for labels.

Designer jeans look just like regular $100 jeans to me, I don't see what the difference would be! Jeans are jeans to me, meant to be worn to HEEHAW, not dinner on the ship wink

All jeans look good on you....you can get away with wearing whatever you want wherever you want with your cute figure ... Most can't ... Most need dress codes.

I am a casual kinda gal so I wear "dress jeans" all the time. Defined as dark dye, trouser cut and worn with heels. Of course flip flops and a tee shirt can totally ruin that "dress" look! Personally I think I look more appropriate than the ill-fitting jackets with mismatched slacks folks. But the dress codes do not allow for those subjective opinions, no jeans is NO jeans no matter how good they look.

I have some super blinged out expensive designer jeans which fit like skin and look fabulous (even if I do say so myself--my friend says you can see that butt in outer space). At any rate, while they are very stylish, I would never consider wearing the, to dinner on regent.

Okay that was pretty funny. Can you imagine if they did walk in dressed like that! Reminds me of some of you wearing norwegian hats into dinner. I guess that was on fjords! Then of course we have sequin ties on Rovos Rail. Adventures in style for sure.

...You crack me up, Arlene! You have an incredibly good memory of fun times. Those fur gloves are somewhere in Africa....may have been part of the donated Rovos attire....
Speaking of adventures in style: I will never forget those "abayas" we had to wear in Saudi Arabia (on CAMEL)!

Please forgive me. I am a little confused. So you can wear Jeans on the last night of a Regent sailing now?

How does putting on a pair of dockers and a decent shirt throw off your packing? This new policy seams odd.

Why don't we ask Mark Conroy at Hee Haw? I would be curious to see how he defends the change in policy. wink

I don't have a problem with jeans but shorts is going way too far - I still remember of VOF when on the last night Doug invited us to Signatures but they wouldn't let us in because we weren't wearing jackets (already packed and probably wrinkled). Shorts?????

There is No way to tell $22 CK Jeans or a $300 Pair of Lucky Jeans.. I believe you can look good going to dinner in Jeans, I do this usually in Summer time in the Cape, Where shorts are common as well. I think Mark is right and we should ask Mark Conroy, what is the real reason for this. I mean how casual do they want to go? Are people complaining that much that? We all know from time to time we see someone wearing Jeans, but I agree with Peter Shorts????? IT just does NOT look good.

Someone posted a reply from Mark on CC to an inquiry, saying he thought jeans in SM were OK. Don't remember which thread . . . .

Seems odd to me since the policy on the ships is no jeans or shorts after 6pm that he would change the policy in such a casual way.

In my mind, jeans are jeans and once the line is broken, it's hard to say no to scruffy ones (or new tattered one) and not to designer types.

This has to be an "all or nothing" situation. IMO

Please do ask Mark in October!

Peggy

I agree with Peggy that jeans are jeans - and it's too subjective to say what's appropriate (expensive designer ones are ok but not the "new" torn ones)?

But shorts? I don't travel (eg fly) in shorts but usually wear jeans nowadays (usually "designer" ones - mostly Hugo Boss with some Zegna, Armani, Diesel - which I don't think would be appropriate for an evening on a cruise unlike the rest of them).

Besides I don't really think that the typical Regent cruiser wears shorts flying - even the Caribbean since those cruises are mostly in winter and home is probably a cold(er) place.

A few years ago, jeans were only acceptable on casual Fridays in the business setting. At meetings, jeans were never considered business casual. I think what was once Dockers as business casual has now relaxed to jeans in business settings and that is carrying over to ship attire. I work for a major corporation. In fact, as of this year, we are allowed to wear jeans EVERYDAY. We choose to dress by our own discretion, with many of us choosing to only not wear jeans when we have a major meeting.

You really can go on and on with the jeans topic...now that jeans are colored and can look a lot like nice slacks and can cost a lot more! So, are jeans only "blue?" Things have loosened up a lot in the past year in the business casual setting and dress jeans are now acceptable for everyday wear. Dress jeans are: "jeans must not have holes or be frayed." Folks tend to have brains and look nice. I am sure this will carry over to the ship setting. Mark Conroy is part of this corporate environment and is most likely responding to what he sees day in and day out, which is a much more relaxed attitude towards attire.

Abour eight years ago on Voyager my mom came into Compass Rose in jeans. For those that knew me back then, you can imagine my reaction. Still, she is my mom so I never said anything; neither did anyone else. I also remember a trip about the same time where an older gentlemen (not that much older but definitely a gentleman) walked into Compass Rose on an informal night without a jacket. He was kindly reminded of the dress code, and did a u-turn to go get a coat. He was mildly embarassed; seemed more apologetic, when he walked back into the dining room.

On PiP, there was someone that always wore shorts to the casino at night even though the policy was no shorts after 6pm. All of these are minor transgressions. I can tolerate nice jeans in dining room but I will definitely put a negative comment on my comment card if someone wears shorts into Compass Rose.
