The itinerary for CANADA does not include a stop in Newport; however, the map does show a stop in Newport. As I cannot figure out why Navigator would need a sea day between Gloucester and New York; I imagine the stop in Newport might be real. :app: Just one more reason to join almost 50 of us already booked on CANADA! :lct:

I don't know, Marc. If you look at the Ports & Excursions tab for the NY to Montreal cruise and for CANADA, you'll see that the NY to Montreal cruise shows Newport as a port while the tab for CANADA does not show Newport as a port.
I hope you're correct but I have a feeling that, for CANADA, Regent took the NY to Montreal map, added Charleston, Savannah and Ft. Lauderdale to it and forgot to remove Newport. :mecry:

Newport would be a real "treat" for a visit - not sure why anyone would stop in Gloucester   maybe it was revitalized past 20 yrs ;) ;)

I suppose Joanna, they'll take you out on a whale watch in Gloucester or they'll take you over to Salem. But, if you don't have good weather, there isn't too much to do. The food is better North Shore of Mass, but, Newport is more fun no matter what the weather.
By the time we are through with our daughter's wedding there this summer, we will know Newport inside out and will be glad to recommend sites, tips, restaurants, etc. We just spent Valentine's day weekend there and really enjoyed it. I hope it is a stop for you all as there is a lot you can do there. You don't even need to take a tour. Last year, when we were up planning the wedding, we saw a Princess ship in the harbor and realized it must be Ray and Penny's ship. What a coincidence! We called them and waved to them as they cruised out of the harbor.

I noticed that too Marc. Agree that Newport would be such a wonderful stop.

I am sure Regent has its reasons for stopping in Gloucester and not docking in Boston... It would take appx 45 minutes to get to downtown Boston from the Waterfront, about 30 minutes to Salem..Not much at all going on in Gloucester and really not much at this time of year.. We used to live in this area and in October there is not that much to do at all... Both Gloucester/Salem waterfronts really shut down and I guess if your interested in seeing the Witches its a good time. We are in Salem a couple times a week because we own property there... You can kill a few hours no problem... I believe on the original Viking trip the Newport stop over was only like 5 hours... I remember this because it left Newport at 2pm and didnt get into Boston til next morning, and couldnt figure out why they had to leave so early to travel 65miles. This is a wonderful port and easily can kill a day or two doing dining/shopping Mansions cliffwalk which is 3 miles one way I believe... Hopefully they will add that as a stop since so many would like to go there...

I can shed light on the early departure time from Newport - the Voyager couldn't clear the Cape Cod Canal bridges! Not sure if it is one or both of the highway bridges-Sagamore at the north end, Bourne at the south-they are the same design, but I don't know if they have the same clearance. I think the railroad bridge is a lift type, but how much lift I haven't a clue.
Regent didn't figure out that the Voyager couldn't fit under one or more of the bridges till the schedule was published and perhaps, people already on board. They had to go around Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and the Cape, and it took a long night. I think I recall they left Newport early and got into Boston a little late.
The Navigator can make it under the canal bridges. We did an earlier cruise from Montreal to Tampa on the Navigator, and it went through the canal, but it didn't stop in Newport. Tide might have something to do with it.
The weather in that area can be treacherous. It is where one of the Air Force's Texas Tower radar sites went down in 1961. It was weakened in a hurricane the previous fall, and collapsed in a nor'easter early in '61. I was a technician on a radar site out west at the time, and remember hearing about all of the recriminations and investigations. Having USAF officers in charge of structures at sea was not a really great idea, it turned out. There were a couple of Navy ships nearby, one an aircraft carrier, but the tower wasn't thought to be in such bad shape (AF captain’s judgment), and it went down suddenly.
I remember I knew one of those who died on the tower slightly, I had earlier served with him at a site in Benghazi Libya, but now I can't even recall his name. Sad. Just another war story today, I guess, but it was very real back then.
[size=8]Too Many To List - 416 days & counting on Radisson/Regent, and 150+ days on 8 other lines, with one cruise booked next month on the Mariner, Miami to Honolulu 22 days
