I have been going through withdraw the past few weeks- no puppies. And I clicked and I saw my favorite one in a crate. Co-workers wanted me to get her- and I said nope- I have my own cocker spaniel puppy.

I am so happy-- :app: -Yea--- this way we can see Snow White..

Karen, unfortunately, no. Snow White is a direct translation of her hungarian name. She is doing fine. We ran around the yard and investigated for about 1/2 hour and she has been mostly sleeping since. Babe, my cat has shown interest, but will not get close unless she is asleep.
Andrea, no you missed nothing. I didn't want to say anything until she was here safe and sound.
Jan, Maryland isn't that far away. You can come and visit her anytime.
Kathy, sorry, nice idea, but she is already answering to Hofeherke Snow White! (I will eventually shorten it)

We became Grandparents on Tuesday, 9-16-08 ( a little girl, Kasey Lynn, Gina and Josh parents, Nick big 2 year old brother) so We've been sooooooo out of touch with LCT...sorry!) Anway, so happy...we'll get to watch Snow White grow up. Please post pictures. Congratulations Momma Lynn !!! Lynn, how did you arrange shipping her to USA?

How cool and congratulations, Lynn! Snow White is too adorable. She looks so great coming out of the crate. Our cats were a mess and that was just a 5 hour flight!

I vote yes! We never thought of this when Karen drove to Ohio to adopt Elle. (I hope I remembered her name correctly, Karen.) Elle would make a purr-fectly adorable mascot.

So many of you have adorable pets but Snow White is the first animal we all saw before any of us were actually committed to her/him and then went on to become adopted by one of our own. Lauri's idea makes a lot of sense to me.

How was the first night for SW in the USA?! We want to know!!!! :woh:

The first night was incredible! I am such a softy, I let her stay in the den and kitchen. She adopted the couch as her bed. No sound from her, but a bit of potty training is in order. However, she unloaded right in front of the door because no one was around to take her out.
Gyula sent some Hungarian phrases to help. It was good. Within 1 day, I had her walking on the leash!!!!!
Any potty training advice would be appreciated. I have read books and she is doing ok for a puppy, but it has been over 30 years since I did this. The main problem is when she pees overnight, I cannot find it.
She is a joy and a lot of fun, although she is still sleeping quited a bit.
She is the best decision I have made in quite a while.

Lynn, I am so excited for you - she is definitely the cutest out of all the puppies!!

I remember when we got Tigger the breeder said "puppies sleep 23 hours a day" - 10 years later and I think he still sleep about 23 hours a day!

From what I can remember about potty training, you should take her out about 20 minutes after eating or drinking. No food or water about 2 hours before bed, but take her out once more before going to sleep. I'm sure Marcie will have much better advice.

I hope you're taking lots of pictures when she's playing!!

The most effective training method for me was crating the pup. They won't go where they "live". The crate should be big enough for her to turn around, but not so big that she can go and move to the other side of the crate.
At her age, she just can't make it through the night.

I know crating her would break your heart, but it is fast and painless (for the pup)

My Spunky was crated at night for the first year, and now goes into the crate when no one is in the house or when he gets spooked. Of course as I write this, he is sleeping on the bed.

Diane has it right. Confinement for puppies is the fastest way to house break. Reward her and make a big deal when she does it. With Daisy, I would say Make Wee or Go Poop and when she did it, a big whoopty do and treat. She goes on command which is great when you are headed out and they will be inside for a while. Keep SW on a leash so you can control her when you want her to go. No playtime until she does her business when you take her out.

Nature's Miracle is the best stuff for removing any traces of scent. Blot the spot with white toweling to remove the urine, pour Natures Miracle on the spot and voila!

I was against the crate, but I think it might help. The only reason I can think of that it wouldn't is that she had to spend over 24 hours in it to get here, and she did her "duty" in it since there was no where else. I have washed it out well and will try it tonight.

Lynn, I agree with the others. I had never used any kind of crate before but when Nick was born 2 years ago we decided to try it with Mr. Magoo (shitzu) just to be safe when he was a toddler. Mr. Magoo now loves to go in his little house. It is all his to have when he wants peace and quiet. I think this will be the easiest way to potty train Snow White. Once she's trained, you may or may not want to continue to use the crate...probably will until she's over the "chewing stage" when she's home alone. The most important thing in any puppy training is Praise Praise Praise!

I agree that the crate training is the easiest way to go. Some dogs continue to view the crate as a home...others could care less once potty training is finished. Our Havanese doesn't like or use the crate now, but it was a reasonable and fast way to potty train.

After the first night of hearing the little cries, we carried the crate (with puppy inside) into our bedroom so he slept next to our bed, in his crate. In the morning, we'd carry the crate (puppy still inside) into the kitchen, then scoop puppy up and carry him outside. After he did his thing, we'd bring him inside for play time, breakfast and then a nap in the crate (which stayed in the kitchen til night). When he woke we'd carry him outside and repeat the process. Tedious but it worked!

There's a whole other puppy training method using a Purina product that is essentially 'doggie litter'....but that's another story.

We didn't crate train our last dog Shadow. We paper trained her. This works for some, although not everybody advocates it. Looking back at the webcam stuff I saw, were the puppies encouraged to go on paper? This might help.

We gradually moved the paper outside the back door, and on to the grass. Then just eliminated the paper.

But lots of people swear by crate training.

I forgot to mention crate training simply because it didn't work for Tigger. I mean, he spends most of his day in the crate when we're at work, but he still makes a mess. We've been told when he's at the kennel whenever they clean up the first thing he does is remark his territory.

We did try the "free-range terrier program" one day...the day he decided to tear apart my love seat from college. We didn't really have room for it anyway.

We crate trained both of our Maltese and I found this to be an easy way to potty train. They both still love to sleep in their crates, they are 7 and 4, and we do find the little one in hers when she just wants some quiet time.
