Wow, and here we are up in Toronto with no snow at all. Amazing, it looks like Montreal or Quebec City!

Argh!
I knew it was bad but the photos make it out for real, especially the patio furniture.
Is Mac a spoiled dog? (Saw all his stuffed toys) ;)
Penny flies home from England tomorrow and am hoping she won't be affected by the new upcoming nuisance.
Cheers! Ray

That's wild, John! Thanks for posting the photos. Of course my flight to DCA was cancelled this morning. Going to give it a try tomorrow morning. Hoping not to get stuck Thursday and not get home. They might just actually get some snow in Maine in the next couple of days. Keeping my fingers crossed for some good conditions this weekend.

And that's BEFORE Wednesday's 'blowing and drifting' wind advisory...
We definitely need to send this weather back from whence it came ;-( . The grocery stores were nuts this afternoon - and we only got about 12" inches here (vs. Philadelphia's 28+").
Cheers, Anne

Send it on up! We got nothing this past weekend.
I just booked a one-way DCA-BOS for Friday morning just in case.

OH MY GOODNESS!!!! We lived in Reston, Va in the 70's and remember a few inches of snow would shut down DC and suburbs - stay warm and cozy all!

This is the worst I have seen it in 30 years in DC and as John pointed out there's another 10-20 inches forecast for Wednesday on top of the snow we still have on the ground.
I had to work over the weekend and stayed in a hotel in DC while Mona was home without power all day Saturday. JoAnn was nice enough to give her a call to say hello.
Let's hope we don't have another power outage or lose any trees in the new storm. Tom.

Those pictures say it all. We had a good 2 feet on Sunday in our yard, measured 22" on the front porch. And more forecasted for today/tonight and in to tomorrow. We are supposed to fly to Nashville Friday morning, even booked a room for Thursday night at the Dulles Marriott since there is no chance a cab could/would come down our street. We had one plow pass sometime Saturday night and that probably saved us, and a few cars up and down yesterday, but have had no mail since Friday, no paper since Saturday, and no delivery trucks since Friday. Frank has managed to get the driveway clear, the side walkway clear and a path along the deck to the side walk way. He and our neighbor went out yesterday to the post office, bank and market and Frank said the roads are mostly packed and rutted snow, not clear like they usually are. I think the storm last weekend was ranked as the fourth biggest in DC history, and the total accumulation for the winter is so far number 4, after this coming storm it will move up I'm sure. However, we have been very lucky and not lost power, so we've had heat, TV, internet. Just praying that we stay as lucky during the new storm. We are in the 12-18" range, people more North are shown for higher amounts.

The snow does look beautiful; glad to hear everyone is coping.
One question: Why is the government off today? Snow is not arriving until later.
I think it was in Feb 85 that we got back to back storms in DC that totaled around two feet; ended up walking a lot to Tysons Corner. :D
PS We are in St Moritz today where the snow is beautiful. Went on a horse drawn sleigh ride this afternoon through the woods and across the lake. Hmmmm, maybe there is a market for sleigh rides in Virginia and Maryland? :D

Fed Govt is closed mainly due to the side roads not being completely plowed. The Metro/MARC/VRE/Metrobus is also still on a limited schedule. Even some of the main arteries are missing lanes and still a little snow covered. If they had Liberal Leave policy today, the gridlock would probably have been insane.
Now with another 12-18 hitting tonight and tomorrow, the Fed Govt will probably be closed Wed also. They are really in a bind. They really need to get back to work soon. To make it worse, we are approaching a 3 day weekend!

John, maybe they should stay home for next six months to see if anyone notices? ;) I don't see why they can't make it to work like hospital employees, and metro drivers, and others. Has no one heard of cross country skis? What is wrong with driving on snow packed roads? Snow tires work great. I am sure the guys in the Firestone garages are at work to put on new snow tires for people. After all, they don't get paid if they don't work. Good article . In Colorado, we had a four foot snow one friday night. No plow into area until Sunday. National Guard out to pick up doctors as needed. But, we were at work by Tuesday. I just can't see giving workers and students off yet another day. Then, the teacher's union is going to ask for a fortune when school is extended a week. Sorry, pet peeve of mine. It took me 3.5 hours to get from Alexandria to Springfield the day the Air Florida plane crashed into the Potomac. From that time, I decided to live closer to work (Tyson's Corner) or had good snow tires on my car.

Getting individuals to work is not really the issue. We were able to get to the hockey game because we were determined to see Ovechkin put a beat down on Crosby :D It's putting 500,000 people onto a rail/road system that's just not ready for them. It would be counter-productive to have the roads jammed packed with commuters when the snow removal equipment is still trying to open up enough lanes to handle such traffic. Like I said, it's a tough call and you are going to be criticized either way.
As far as schools go, even though our neighborhood has private contractors working around the clock trying to clear the snow, there is literally no where for the kids to wait for a school bus. Plus the counties have 100's of miles of roads to clear for the busses. When you make those school closing decisions you have to consider the entire county, not just the close in urban areas which get plowed quicker. I'm glad I'm not the one making the decisions!
Hopefully this next storm will shift and not hit us as hard so everyone can get back to work Wed or Thurs. Trust me, Tonya is pulling her hair out sitting at home. She actually getting a lot of work done from home, but would rather be at the office.

Wow, impressive photos!
I remember getting hit by a blizzard in Denver on Christmas 1982. We had drifts 12 feet tall in our yard. We were supposed to leave town for the holidays so we had very little food in the house. We relied on our neighbors until one neighbor took several people out of the neighborhood to the grocery a week after the storm. It was brutal.
I really hope this next storm spares you all.

Very little food in the house I never worry about - despite fact we aren't expecting any blizzards I think old habits die hard - since Tony grew up in Milwaukee (blizzard country) he is obsessed with buy one get one free deals KEEP cabinets FULL incase of pending disaster - so we have 50 cans of soup, 30 jars of spaghetti sauce, 14 boxes of pasta, 20 cans of tuna, chili, you get the picture - and some gadget to heat food - propane butane I don't know what it is

Montgomery and Howard Counties in Maryland have cancelled school for the whole week! :( They decided this before any new snow has fallen. Looks like lots of parents will be looking for daycare since they still will need to work.

Umm, it's snowing at my office here in Montgomery County right now. Maybe you're in a different part of the county as me ;) I really don't think the decision to cancel for the rest of the week has anything to do with the snow that may be here tonight. I think they realize that the task to clear out all the neighborhoods and schools is just not realistic and it's best to just let the parents know now so they can plan for the rest of the week instead of just stringing them along for what's inevitable. The forecast is still for 12-18 inches of snow with a possible mix of sleet and freezing rain. The worst part is that the winds are expected to whip up to 45mph. They are still trying to get power back to about 10,000 homes in the area. This won't make it any easier.

Nothing happening in Annapolis now. But all flights back to Boston this afternoon were cancelled. I'm confirmed on 1 flight Thursday evening and 2 flights Friday morning. So, I think I'm in pretty good shape for getting home this weekend.

We woke up to six inches yesterday, which was a total shock to everybody (including all the weather people). Turned to rain, mostly melted today, but the temps are dropping so anything not dried off the roads could be bad tonight.

I really hope this next storm spares you all. I remember that storm. I was snowed in on a Amtrak Train coming back from SFO with my then 2 and 4 year old Daughter's. It took two days to get out of Denver and the only thing that could get around was my old Dodge Power Wagon Feed Truck. Meanwhile Australia is having floods, it's going to rain again.

We all have our stories. When I was in law school up in that area (old lady that I was), it was the worst for snow. My daughter and I had a week off school! But that was anywhere from 1994-1996. I think there is a record somewhere for that year. One storm after another. I loved being off from school just like a high schooler! Of course, my daughter Jes also did not have school!
I still say John and Tonya need a snowblower, with all those bottom teeth they have.

It is snowing again - we are under a blizzard warning. Looks like we already have another 5 to 6 inches already and its not going to stop anytime soon. Our chances of going to Nashville on Friday are less and less at this rate. UGHHHHH!!!

This is insane. I can barely see the street in front of my house (and it's only 25 feet away!!) The winds are gusting over 40mph.
I slept 9 hours last night, but I'm still exhausted. I'm tired of driving in this stuff; I'm tired of trying to find fresh veggies and meat at grocery stores; I'm tired of trying to keep my dog from destroying my house due to major cabin fever!!
I'm just praying we don't lose power.

I have to agree with you John. try doing construction in this weather. We are suppost to get over a foot this afternoon. I missed my calling, I should of became a weatherman. $$$$$$$$$$$$$ a year: Billion dollar equipment and you only have to be right 50 percent of the time... Wish that worked in my business... We were suppost to get an inch or so or get missed by the storm now we are getting hammered... Global Warming??????? We are freezing to death up here...

This is Arlene. We're in Florida for the month. I feel for you all there. Hope you keep your electricity. .
Marc the big difference between Denver and DC is that Denver expects large snows and has the equipment to handle it, whereas DC certainly has not expected the 28" they got, with another 10+ on the way today. The weather channel is saying it's a once in a lifetime winter there. They were still digging out from the wknd storm. MD had used up their snow budget BEFORE this past wknd's storm.
A Bad day at Sea is better than a Good day on Land!

Gorgeous pictures John, and I'm glad you didn't miss the game!! Is Bruce Boudreau still your coach? I knew him when he was a pup, playing for the Toronto Marlies! Great guy, fantastic guy really.

Bruce is still the coach. He's doing a great job. Of course in hockey you can be in 1st place, but lose 3 in a row and you can get fired. The Washington Caps is a great franchise with a great owner.
Weather Update: They just pulled all the snow removal crews and PEPCO power crews off the roads in Maryland due to dangerous conditions. They cannot even plow right now due to the blowing, drifting and very poor visibility. Right now, we have an additional foot of snow on our deck that we cleared yesterday. The snow is now totally covering our 4 foot fence in the back yard. In some areas, the drifts are probably close to 5-6 feet. The snow is supposed to start letting up here in a few hours, but the winds are going to be strong all day.

John - Hoping you keep your power as well! Also - not much build up on the roof. This snow is really heavy - don't need roof problems!!
It seems to be a very slow moving storm. We didn't see snow until about 7 pm last night, and it was minimal - 4" or so. The winds are just starting to pick up, as is the snow. The weather people on the local channel says Bucks County is expected to be the epicenter of the storm (? in which region), and they are sticking to it. Temperature is hovering right around 32 degrees.
Funny story on local news: Anchor is standing in snowy area, exhorting all of us to stay home. "No donuts today at Dunkin Donuts; Starbucks CLOSED; only gas station a block away and 7-11 across the street is open. And who, may I ask, needs a slushie today??" Then a guy is running all out down the other side of the street. Anchor is obviously bored, so coaxes the guy to come over and talk on camera. Guy nearly gets hit by car, but makes it to the camera. Anchor says "What are you doing??" Guy says "My wife is pregnant and needs ginger ale right now! I'm heading to the 7-11!!"
I trundled out today in my ski gear to have a look. Very few people out, and those that were were manning shovels or snowblowers.
NJ has had mostly rain - good to melt the prior build up, bad for ice when the temperature drops.
