Thank you one & all for your wonderful words, thoughts & prayers.
I was away this week in Europe on business. When I got home Thursday evening, I was greeted at the door by Maggie (& Andi, of course). A bit unsteady on her feet, but tail a-waggin'!
Andi told me that she heard the car &, for the 1st time that day, got out of bed & went downstairs to greet me.

This is so hard. This little girl has wormed her way into my heart so deeply that I cannot explain it.She was my buddy AND my roomie when Andi was in Switzerland.

Now, she won't eat. She ate yesterday before I came home, but didn't keep it down. Today, she is not interested.
We have her on fluids.

The tail still wags and the legs don't seem to work as well.
But the eyes still shine as everything else seems to be shutting down.

I'll carry her outside tonight & she'll walk to pee & then back upstairs to her bed.

She is still our Maggie, but ever so sick.

Our time with her is short, but every minute is special.

Again, I thank you all for your sweet support. It has meant a lot to Andi & me.

Doug

Thanks for all of your kind thoughts. Doug and I do appreciate them.

Well, Maggie has decided to eat meat. Chicken or steak. However, she seems to throw everything up. Any suggestions?

Andi, I've gone through similar and I had the best luck hand feeding with itty bitty pieces in my palm. When does Maggie go back to the Vet?

Andi,
Our dog had kidney failure at the end of her life and this sounds familiar. We were told that high protein (like meat) was not something that could be tolerated and would accelerate the kidney failure. We kept her alive on rice and green vegetables boiled in chicken broth for another year. Towards the end we did have to do with tiny bits sucked off our fingers and hope that she would not vomit it. She too in the last few days of her life would ONLY eat beef and then vomit it, but she would not eat any thing other than beef those last few days. I figured if that was what she wanted for her last meal I would not deprive her and gave her steak. You might try rice and vegetables in broth and see if she will eat it or keep it down. You have my best wishes and sympathy. I do know what you are going through and it is awful. Good luck, Debbie

She is at the end. We live day to day. Tonight, we saw Barbra. The last song she sang was dedicated to those who have lost dogs..it was "Smile, when your heart is breaking..."

Thank you all for caring and your kindness.

Thanks for posting Maggie's update. Sad news, indeed. A very emotional irony that she sang "Smile" dedicated to those who lost dogs.

Hope you enjoyed Barbra. Here is a review of her performance

Like others here, I went through a very similar situation with my Katy. As painful and heartwrenching as it was, the memories of holding her head in my lap and stroking her face those last few days are ones I would never give up.

I have tears in my eyes thinking about what you are going through!

You are in my thoughts!

Andi & Doug,

Maggie was loved by so many. You certainly provided her with a loving home and excellent care until her age and health caused her to loose the battle to stay at your side.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
