If you have a plain brown or black sport coat you can get by on formal nights. One coat and a couple pairs of pants cna cover for the formal & informal nights.
The only way to visit the engine room is by Chief Engineer's approval and that usually requires having worked in some related industry. Being an old sea dog may fit the bill.
