This article is to update all the Members of TUSK, WILD DOG, and ROAR, as well as all of those who have experienced the wonders of a South African Safari, or who are avid supporters of Wildlife.

I think at some time we have all felt enormous gratitude, admiration and awe at the commitment and effort of Duncan Rodgers and the Leopard Hills team, as well as all of the other associated and neighboring lodges who emulate their example, for placing above their own well being not only the interests and future of the Animals they are privileged to oversee, but also for fostering and supporting the local communities by funding and building schools, medical centres and crèches, all paid for by donations and profits from the Lodge activities.

This time they do not need our money.

They have had several traumatic experiences and need our solidarity.

The photos posted are of the Sand River Pride.

I am sad to inform those of you that do not already know that the entire Pride, 2 adults and 5 sub adult cubs, was slaughtered at the end of January.

Following extreme flash flooding on the Sand River , the Kruger Private Reserve Perimeter Fence was undermined and the entire Pride passed through to the outside, where they were shot on sight. This was not the work of the local community, but on orders of someone within the Parks Board.

Investigations are continuing, and information is not yet fully confirmed, - indeed there is one as yet an unsubstantiated report that one juvenile escaped and returned through the breach into the reserve.

A concerted tracking operation in the Western Kruger has been in force ever since that report came in, although sadly, no tracks or sightings have turned up; - but having said that, the terrain is heavily overgrown, and with the floodwaters and debris it is difficult to even recognize the landmarks we all know, the Causeway more closely resembles Niagara than anything we recall, and crossing the river is virtually impossible, except by boat.

Soft mud and fresh rains ensure any tracks are degraded almost as soon as they are made. Our only consolation is that we know that we have some of the most experienced Trackers and Rangers in South Africa giving their all to find this remaining Lion and check its condition.

All of the teams are despondent and disheartened, and the most valuable thing we can all contribute right now is to let them know how much we value their efforts and support their commitment in this difficult time.

I need to stress that at this point any criticism or condemnation of those in any position of authority would be most counter productive, separate efforts are under way to explore ways of trying introduce changes to prevent this from ever happening again, which realistically would be the most fitting tribute that could ever be paid to this magnificent Pride, and I promise you will be given an opportunity to add your voice to that petition if it is found necessary to circulate it, and you wish to.

What is most needed at this time are positive comments of support and solidarity to those who are struggling at ground level to work through this, and whose Morale has probably never been at a lower ebb.

If you feel that you would like to add your voice of encouragement, the web site is:

Thank you for your time to read this, and my gratitude to Ngaire for allowing me to have it posted on the prime page of LCT.

This is so disturbing Tim as we were just at Savanna (next to Leopard Hills) in November and traversed this entire area. :mecry: :mecry: :mecry:

I know our posts on this Leopard Hills website will help with the efforts taking place to support Duncan and his team and all the others in the area that are working so diligently to protect Sabi Sands.

PLEASE post on this web site. The more recognition those working to make changes receive the more impact it will have on the outcome.

This will be a matter of the NUMBERS of posts from concerned people supporting those calling for changes, and this is a wonderful way to show how those of us in the United States care about retaining the magic that is South AFrica.

It does not have to be a long post we just need a lot of posts. Please take just a moment and post.

The web site is:

Thank YOU.

Yes, it takes one's breath away, this is so tragic. I can still hear the roaring of those 2 lion king brothers at Lion Sands calling each other....

Really sad, and we haven't come close to doing one of those Safaris, but it always, always makes me sad to hear of bad things happening to animals.

This situation is just as, Andrea and Suzie said, heartbreaking.

I imagine it is easier to shoot them than to try to tranquilize them by darts and move them back to the reserve. Hopefully changes will be made to ensure that this does not happen again and by posting all this support it certainly helps their cause with the authorities. They need the tourists. It may be necessary to sign a petition and if so I encourage you all to help with your signatures. He is hoping this thread may do the trick.

Some of you have met Tim. He was on ICE, Fjords and he loves Africa and is now going back to Leopard Hills every year since I took him down the first time on Tusk. He shared a vehicle with me, Ken, Gail and Eugene.

I have been trying to get him to post for years, he travels with us a lot and you see this is his first post ever. He is determined to assist in every way he can to ensure this does not happen again.

How sad. Is this the same pride that we saw at Lion Sands?

Could be but I am not sure. That may be a little too far away. The Leopard that Carol encountered lost her two cubs as they got out also and were shot. They rescued the mother leopard and bought her back and hope she will have more cubs soon.

I was wondering that about Lion Sands too, Donna, but thought it might be too far away - we had a terrific viewing opportunity with a pride in the sand where Gil, Arlene, Gemma & Bill's land rover became stuck.

Nice to see Tim posting - will visit the Leopard Hills site and make a comment.

We wondered the same thing...If you look at that picture of the Lions lying in the sand on the webblog, it reminded us of all those pics we took of the lions that morning, Leslie. Doug even has a pic of a lion that resembles the lion in that picture and we wondered if it were the same one and hoped it wasn't.

I hope our posts can help. It's a nice effort of Tim's.

I knew nothing about this until I read about on LCT. It totally makes me sick and seems so senseless to harm these beautiful animals. Our full support and respect goes out to those people that are trying to help. Judy
