I was fortunate to be aboard Azamara Quest last January r/t Buenos Aires, 18 days. I was traveling solo, which I will come back to shortly. Azamara will not be in Antarctica in 2014, but will be returning in 2015. I am seriously thinking about returning!
We did not "do" any landings, which we all knew in advance. For the passengers aboard, this was just fine! No Zodiacs, no watery boots; we were happy to stay aboard with our hot toddies on deck. I can assure you we saw as many or more whales than the other ships that were closer to shore. And penguins galore, on each and every iceberg! Sea lions, etc, etc., etc. Great naturalists aboard, with daily commentary from the bridge. And many special lectures (the equal of Crystal); especially enjoyed the multi- part Ernest Shackleton lecture series.
Now, about sailing solo. The single supplement was just 125% on this sailing, but more importantly was the way the crew made sure all was well with me. And, has been noted many times before, it was by far the friendliest crew I have ever experienced, in my many cruises, Regent and otherwise.
So, I will be leaving next week for an Athens-Dubai cruise (14 nights) aboard Azamara Journey. 125% single supplement, free air, 2 comp nights at the Hotel Grande Bretagne in Athens... The ship has an overnight in Dubai, but I have added a 2 night package (very affordable ) from Azamara. Doesn't get much better than that!
We will have an "Azamazing" evening in Limassol, Cypress, which I will take because, hey, it's free....
I do like Oceania as well, but the crew there can't hold a candle to the staff (top to bottom, bottom to top) on Azamara.
I will gladly answer any questions any of you may have.

Thanks Donald,
It sounds like Azamara is the line for solo cruisers these days. More and more former Regent cruisers are now trying Azamara. Thanks for your review.

Thanks Donald, very nice review. Having done Antarctica twice (with landings) I might be tempted to try a sailing like this.
Have a wonderful time on the Journey! If you thought the Quest had a friendly crew, wait until you meet the staff on the Journey. I really thought it was hyperbole when I read the Journey had the friendliest staff at sea, but it's actually true.
I'll be on the Quest next month sailing from Seville-Miami. Another fantastic deal - 125% single supplement and I got in on the pay for an inside get upgraded to a balcony special they had in May. True, the cabins aren't Regent-size, but when you're alone it doesn't really matter. There's plenty of room for one.

Azamara was fantastic. Will post a full review when I have a full size keyboard. In my opinion best value for small ship cruising out there. Never waited for anything. Waiters can actually pour wine now that's a new concept!!!!!!! Quest was fantastic Andrea enjoy.

It's a shame to be so close and not set foot on the 7th continent! When we landed several years ago on a Regent charter for almost all of us it was our 7th continent - including a 12-year-old girl! When I was 12 I'd been to Canada by car and boat across the lake from where we lived.
Once we flew low over Grand Canyon on a beautiful day and it was spectacular. We flew over but have not actually been to Grand Canyon. Maybe some time.

It's a shame to be so close and not set foot on the 7th continent! I agree, Ted. There is nothing like stepping foot on all seven continents, especially Antarctica, but maybe that is not everyone's dream. For those with mobility issues or finances, that may not be accomplished. Those of us who have been know that it isn't the easiest cruise. It is truly an amazing adventure. I am so glad I had the opportunity and would love to go again.
