Is it necessary for Tom to have a sportcoat for dinner on the Explorer? We are trying to organize our gear and I was not quite certain if he would need one.

One night is listed as "Informal" on the website, and that usually means a coat, but could be different on the Explorer

As I recall on Explorer II in 2004 some wore coats & some did not. Most people wore nice sweaters to dinner each night. Taking a coat also depends on your pre/post cruise plans.
Pam what happened to your Alaskan cruise in May? We are doing back to back Panama Canal/Alaska in May.

I do not plan to take a coat, one more thing to pack and want to fit it all into one bag. It's only one night and I could always wear the red regent coat  All nights have no dress code but one 09-feb, seems to be a little strange

I have to laugh - we had SO much back & forthing last year for POOP/POP for the Hanseatic on the subject of "coat or no coat for men"...many great emails; i.e., great discussions with Fred on the topic :) Don will not be bringing a jacket unless something in Santiago comes up... :D So, yeah, "no jacket required" from here!

We're voting for no jacket! Unfortunately, we didn't even bring any of Al's sweaters to Florida from Seattle. That would have been good -- he has some very nice sweaters he rarely wears! However, when going to Florida sweaters don't exactly pop into mind.
Just TWO weeks!! Penguins, here we come! I had a dream last night that there were penguins here on the beach in Florida ... guess I must be thinking about Antarctica more than I thought!

I am not going to take a jacket for Ken for one night. He can just wear a nice shirt and slacks, they wont kick us out. If all the "non jacketed men stick together" they can all look inappropriate together. We gals will stick by our men no matter what.

Jackie, We dropped the Mariner Alaska cruise in May when we found out we had a wedding to plan! Our daughter is being married on July 5 so the cruise was too close to the big day.

A light sweater works for me - forget the jacket. Betty, If you need to, you could find a good and inexpensive wool sweater in either Santiago or Ushuaia.

Weather report: according to Chilean friends, it's been a very hot summer by local standards so far this year. They reiterated sport jackets and ties not necessary for men.
Gary has now decided to leave the jacket home and pack an extra pair of shorts -- maybe for the desert, or maybe for the hot spring stop in Antarctica or possibly both.

Thanks, Olivia! Our friends told us to be sure to see the geysers if possible. Only problem is that 'adventure' has a 3 am start time.
