Just was woken up by an earthquake. The preliminary report from USGS is that it was a 3.6 magnitude centered within a mile of our house. It lasted just about 10 seconds. No damage, but it will give us something to talk about for a while.

I don't know why I didn't feel it while I was getting ready for work. They mentioned it on the local NBC station, and I just live a few blocks away from there.

(I do live on the ground floor of a highrise that is very solidly built with amazing sound proofing.)

We're in Gaithersburg, so it was pretty close. It started as a quick jolt followed by about 10 seconds of rumbling. Nothing like I experienced in California as a kid, but enough to shake us awake at 5am.

A number of years ago, I experienced one in Orange County, CA, which to me sounded like a train coming with a little ground shaking and dish rattling. It lasted somewhat longer than this mornings quake and was in the 5.0 range as I recall.

This wasn't the first earthquake I slept right through. I didn't have a clue it was happening, and didn't have so much as a crooked picture to show for it.

Am glad it was no more than that and everyone is safe.
