Sending positive vibes to those on the injured list!

That's about all I'll be able to do in this thread until I recover from five days of eating on the run!

If I had done something it would make more sense. No, I just woke up with a sore knee from overuse, or overjogging.

Cyndi, at least you have a diagnosis and can work on getting it better. Good Luck with that. Do what they tell you. Torn ligaments take a few weeks to heal but you should be OK by PIP.

I'm still waiting for the results from my MRI and, of course, Monday is a holiday. At least my knee feels a little better so maybe it won't be anything more than taking time to let it heal.

So today I go lift weights but only while sitting down and only torso, shoulders, arm, stuff. I really hate lifitng weights, so boring.

Another weigh in suggestion after all the injuries. Don't weigh with your crutches, unless of course you have them positioned on the FLOOR holding you up!!!

Thanks to all for your great words of encouragement!!!! You are all so very sweet!!

I've stayed off the foot since Thursday night and I think it has really helped. I'm supposed to go in for a follow up on Monday, but my regular doctor can't see me until 3/18. Right, like I'm going to wait till then. They did schedule me in to see her assistant on this coming Wed. Not sure about the "Assistant" part. I'd really prefer to see a doctor. The urgent care doctor said I could go back there to get the follow up. So I may just do that. I would think they'd be open on Monday even though it is a holiday. I guess I'll find out in the morning.

The good news so far is that my foot seems so much better already. I'm wondering if it isn't just bruised badly or maybe just pulled ligaments rather than torn. Hopefully, they can tell me more on the follow up. So it may be healing much quicker than I'd thought. I've got my fingers and toes crossed for that. All your good wishes may just have done the trick :) :)

Luckily it has been too much effort to try to get around with the crutches, so I haven't been over eating. Can I count that as my aerobic exercise? I sure huffed and puffed and my good leg and bun are killing me :D Maybe by Tuesday or so I can start back with Denise Austin workouts - just staying in my chair at first. I can just bounce around a bunch and then do the isometric and weight exercises. I promise I won't push it as far as my foot is concerned. Again, I'll see what the doctor says.

Colleen - I really do wish you the best with your MRI. I know how upsetting it can be. You are inspiring me with your sitting down exercises. Good for you!! But be careful and don't overdo to compensate.

Don, regarding the windex, I am assuming you are referring to My Big Fat Greek Wedding (which was on TV yesterday & today - great movie!!). I forgot about the windex. I'll get it out now :D :D Also, I actually hit some aggregate concrete, too when I took the fall. (they have a "cute" design of both that and the slippery decorative tile) My chin, knee and hand got scraped up, but doesn't sound like as bad as your friend. Poor thing, tell her I hope she's O.K. and heals quickly.

Olivia, I thought the same thing about my teeth and tongue. I had just gone the day before to get my new permanent crown put in. But they all survived O.K.

Well, sorry to go on and on. As I've told many of you, I'm a big wimp and therefore don't have much experience in getting hurt. So it's a big deal for me!

Don, great new suggestion for our weigh in list about the crutches. I'll try it both ways and see what works best :D

I also came up with another idea. How about us shaving our heads? For those of us concerned about the frizzies, we could solve two problems with one solution :D

Cyndi - hope you get better soon, sorry to hear about the spill. I wouldn't be particularly concerned about seeing your doctor's "assistant" - most physician assistants (PAs) are well trained and should have the confidence of your doctor if they're working with him/her. Of course, the choice is up to you ... here's sending quick healing vibes your way (and for Colleen too!)

Masaki, thanks so much for the input about the doctor's assistant. I've decided to go that route. Don't know why I was concerned as I do use a terrific PA for my gynological care. I guess PA sounds more official than assistant.

Editing to say: I truly hope I didn't offend any PA's out there. I was just being ignorant.

Claudia & Masaki - Thanks for your well wishes, too!!

Colleen, today's the day for you (MRI results) - sending lots of luck your way!!

Colleen, same here. I pray that it is nothing major, just something that is easily treatable.

Cyndi, shaving my head would make me look like Uncle Fester from the Addams Family! I pray that you heal quickly as well.

Well today was weigh in and this week I am down two more pounds. We had way too many nights out last week.

Actually, I couldn't get in to see my doctor and I saw her nurse practitioner. Apparently he can prescribe certain medicine and can refer to specialists.

Anyway, I was pretty impressed with his knowledge. He asked the right questions. Did a "baseline" exam of my good knee then checked the bum knee. He spent plenty of time with me. wrote very thorough notes on the computer.

I've been using PAs and NPs since 1978. If they are good, they know their limits, when to get the doctor and when refer. Go with your gut. I love my doctor but she did a good job hiring this NP. He seems good, too.

Cyndi and Colleen,
Hope you both continue to improve.
I agree that PA's can be extremely good. I almost wish I could always speak just to my orthopaedic surgeon's PA as he really advises me to look at other options than surgery. I like it when medical poeple suggest that you might want to check out websites and different publications.

Well, I am now the proud owner of a pair of crutches. My knee had been feeling better all weekend but I still babied it. Today I find out that I have a hairline fracture of the tibia and a torn miniscus. I see an orthopedic surgeon probably next week.

They did say I could do aerobics with my arms and to go to the gym and ask about equipment like that. But I must admit, using these crutches and hopping when not using crutches may be all the exercise I can stand.

I tried to run a few errands. Ted is not going to be thrilled if he has to do all the shopping. We will either starve or be eating lots of fast food.

Colleen - Ouch! Sorry you have to go through this. I hope that they can fix your knee with Arthroscopy. They will eventually have you doing exercises for your Hamstrings and Quadriceps. If you can do a session of Physical therapy before you have any surgery to start working those muscles, your recovery will be WAY faster. I know - I had the surgery.

The real problem is that I don't have any pain any more and I never did take all the motrin they wanted me to. So now I have to baby the knee but it doesn't hurt. So it is hard to remember to baby the knee. It is just so easy to walk instead of using the crutches.

Kathy, I'll ask about physical therapy before surgery.

Colleen, oh I am so so sorry about the crutches. Besides being a huge nuisance, they just plain wear you out. We get so used to being independant. Your arms and good leg are sure going to get a good workout and you'll be so strong in those areas!! And using the crutches will most certainly be an aerobic workout.

Hang in there. I hope the orthopedic surgeon can give you some needed good news.

I'm going to the PA tomorrow. My foot has improved every day. But as your knee proves, pain isn't always an indication of the damage. We'll see what they have to say about my foot.

On the diet front, I do have a LITTLE bit of good news - 1/2 lb of it. I'm now at 10 lbs down (got past the 9 1/2 I was at for a month) I know it's only 1/2, but I'll take it :D

Don, I'm so pleased for you about being down another 2 lbs yesterday. Your consistency is wonderful. 2 lbs, by 2 lbs (or more) you'll get where you want to be and feel so much better for it!!! :app:

Claudia, good for you! I was in AL last week and had such good tomatoes and asparagus because they were in season. The other vegetables and fruits looked good in the grocery store, as well. Those eight pounds will be gone in no time!

Colleen, It may just be arthroscopy surgery, if it is, its not so bad, not good, but better. I tore my medial miniscus sum years ago had that surgury, was sent home the same day, then had a month of physical therapy and I was good as new. I hope that helps, good luck.-Darbie

Claudia, I am SOOO excited for you!!!! :woh: Another 5 is great and you are now so very close to your goal. As Trish said, you'll be there before you know it!!!

I went yesterday for the follow up on my foot and I was so surprised that my regular doctor, instead of the PA saw me. Either I'm special or she had a cancellation :) Anyway, the official x-ray report showed that there is nothing wrong with my foot - yeah!!! It must be just a bad bruise. I'm officially off the crutches and very glad of it. I can walk without much pain and just a little limping. I expect it to keep getting better daily (fingers & toes crossed). Thanks again for all your concern and encouragement.

Colleen, I didn't mean to rub it in about being off the crutches. I sure hope that it won't be long before you will be saying the same. I hope your recovery goes as well as Darbie's. I'll be sending good thoughts your way DAILY!!!

Great news Cyndi! Looks like in no time you will be up and running good as new.

Well, I think I finally hit that first plateau. I weighed today (which I'm really not supposed to weigh more than one time per week) and my weight has not budged. I have to be down in order to fit into that tux by cruise time. I've only got 77 more days to go.

Just thought I'd post my udate after a visit to the orthopedic surgeon. I can ditch the crutches (YEAH). I am only to do low impact exercises for now, biking, swimming (be careful of the kicking). No deep knee bend type of things, no weight training with the leges (OK with me!!!), no stair stepper, be careful of elipticals. I have been given a sheet of leg exercises to do to build up my quad muscles. One of these needs to be done 1000 times a day (not a typo). Five seconds each time with a rest then repeat. That's over 2 hours just on that exercise.

I go back on May 2. The doctor did say he wasn't going to tell me not to run again but he sure made it sound like it wasn't a good idea. Apparently the location of my tear on the meniscus is not repairable. I really wanted to run a half marathon in October. bummer!

I wonder if jumping on a trampoline is low impact??

I am sorry for the bad news. My understanding is that cartlidge is not repairable. The exercises help compensate for the torn cartlidge. While I don't run, I do walk (altho not much lately cause I am overworked) and you can do that even on a treadmill. As long as there is no pain.

Colleen, it sounds like good news (no more crutches - :) :) ) and bad news (unrepairable torn cartlidge :( :( ). It does sound like you've got quite a few options for your exercising. But if running is your favorite, it will take awhile to adjust to the others. Don't give up. Down the road things might look better than they do now. Hang in there!!!

1000 times a day???? You'll get your exercise just counting it :D

Don, you hang in there, too. Plateaus are never fun. But usually, once it is over you lose an extra amount to make up for it. I'm sure that is what will happen to you. You'll look great in your tux by the time you go on your cruise!!!

1000 times a day! Reminds me of that Snickers commercial, "Not going anywhere for awhile?" I can't imagine, two hours everyday doing the same exercise. I am sure that it beats the altenatives.

Cyndi, I will. You know they are going to come, you just hate it when they do. I figure that it usually only lasts a couple of weeks and then it starts really coming off again.

Tomorrrow night is our big murder mystery night. We had two couples that aren't able to come at the last minute, so we have to rewrite some of the script in a hurry, but that is just part of he excitement.

Well, the assistant who was explaining how to do the exercises, said it doesn't need to be done all at once (DUH!) but like once an hour or while waiting in line at the store or in the shower. So, I've been counting and trying and I've come up with the following.

I can do 75 while showering, drying, combing hair, moisturizing, etc.

I do about 50-60 while reading the paper (standing).

I can do 25-30 duiring a commercial break.

It takes 11 minutes 8 seconds to do 100 reps.

Add the 40 minutes I need to do the various other stuff they gave me and I spend my day counting seconds and reps.

There has got to be a better way.

My mom comes on Wednesday and leaves the next Tuesday. After that I head to the gym to see what might appeal to me.

Colleen, sounds like a lot of work, but still beats the alternatives. Hope it doesn't end up being as tough as it sounds.

Cyndi, yes we have a lot of fun with it. Kind of like Mel Brooks meets Agatha Christie!!! I am just glad that some of you, having had such bad appendages lately, didn't say, "Break a leg!"

Colleen,

Maybe the purpose of counting all those reps is to take your mind off your knee?????? I agree, there has to be a better way. Enjoy your mom's visit and then look forward to going to the gym. I'm sure you'll find a good alternative for you. Take care of yourself!!

I'm actually trying to figure out how to do this without all the counting. So I can read or do something else. My knee doesn't hurt anymore. I don't need to get my mind off of it.

Went to Mass last night and managed to get 256 reps in. But I can't keep counting because I really should pay attention at Mass. I need to get into a system where I do them without thinking about it so often that I know I hit about 1000 every day.

By the way, I love murder mystery dinners. I have a maltese falcon on my mantel from winning one.

Don - You crack me up!!!

Oh, Colleen, don't you hate it when the pain isn't there anymore but you still have to do it because it's 'good' for you? There ARE better days coming!

Well tomorrow is weigh in day again. I hope that the scale is kind. I was really good this week, so we will see.

Our murder mystery went really well. Two of the three groups even solved it 1/2 way. They didn't know that their were two people were involved in the killing. The Baron, even did a hilarious dying scene!
