Interesting that all the people who frequent LCT and are born on November 5th did this. I misspelled 14 two.

You missed 2 words.
Here are the correct spellings of the ones you got wrong:

weird
occurrence

Then again, I flubbed "syzygy" in a spelling bee championship in jhs. Yes, it really is a word!

The inability of spell check programs to replace the human mind is further illustrated by the poem Ode to my spell checker (author unknown):

Eye halve a spelling checker
It came with my pea sea.
It plainly marks four my revue miss steaks eye kin knot sea.
Eye strike a quay and type a word and weight for it to say
Weather eye yam wrong oar write.
It shows me strait a weigh as soon as a mist ache is maid.
It nose bee fore two long and eye can put the error rite.
Its rare lea ever wrong.
Eye have run this poem threw it,
I am shore your pleased to no.
Its letter perfect awl the way.
My checker told me sew.

It's amazing how many words you think you know how to spell, but can't quite remember. I missed 5. Thank goodness for spell-check!

Does Spelling Matter?
Many people say no, but I disagree. Some people think bad spelling makes you seem stupid. People who say it's not important often point out that many brilliant people are lousy spellers.

Bad spelling makes you look lazy. That's my opinion on the subject. It's true that some geniuses can't spell, but some geniuses walk around with gravy stains on their shirts. That's what bad spelling seems like to me: a big, obvious gravy stain in the middle of your writing.

If you wouldn't wear stained, smelly clothing, you shouldn't be content to have misspelled words all over your letters, articles, stories, or Web pages.

Sometimes the simplest of words look as if they're spelled incorrectly.

I think spell-check has made us forget how to spell!

Joanna, what you've said makes very good sense!

Okay, when I first posted that test, I did not want to admit my score, because on "other" tests that are put out here, I am usually in the "dumb" pile on the bottom. Like Arlene, I thought I was a good speller. SO, my score was 11 wrong, not bad with what everyone else got. I think my hand-eye coordination is not so good, however, like on that snow ball thing. I did not get a certificate for anything when I tried it.

Joanna, love your analysis! I guess I would have a big, obvious gravy stain on my tie, if I wore one!

I used to win spelling bees when I was a kid. I'm a writer. I spot misspellings all the time, I can't help myself. I've done editing work and consider myself a pretty good editor. I've always thought of myself as a better than average speller.

.....And I missed 17!!! I'm so ashamed... :o

I misspelled drunkenness. Go figure. I still think that the correct spelling looks wrong!

I also just misspelled misspell. But my wonderful Google spell checker caught it! That is the best invention since the internet!

Marcie, do you use Google toolbar ? If you already do, just go to your Google toolbar preferences and check the spell checker. It is the greatest! Just clik on the spell checker and it highlites and replaces the misspelled words!

Here is an example of the spell checker in action:

Hi Joanna--

It is just one of those words that looks wrong to me either way. I would say its w----- that I can't spell it, but I would rather say it is strange that I never seem to get it right. Oddly enough, when I missed on "syzygy" in the spelling bee, the other final contestant had to spell one additional word to win. The word was "liquefy" which was one of the words on the test!
