Does anyone have a suggestion for cellphone usage overseas. I am about to get rid of my Cingular service but the phone did work in Ireland. I would like to use my phone in Baltic ports but since I can't get coverage in my kitchen in Atlanta, it's hard to get enthusiastic about continuing with them.

I have used my RAZR in Asia and all over Europe in the last 18 months with no trouble at all. Cingular service has gotten much better, and the connections were as clear as can be. You might just have a dead spot in your home and need for them to know about it. When they plan to put up more cells your location will be on their list. They have added many new cells in our area. Good luck and let us know what you end up with........

easiest thing for us was to buy a new one from mobal.com http://www.mobal.com $49.00.. any calls charge to your credit card.. and no monthly fees and new changing sims cards for every country you visit.. works amazing/clear.

Claudia, thanks for the link to Mobal. That looks intriguing. My only concern is that it is a UK number. I guess since it will only be used in an emergency that is no big deal. I'm just not that familiar with using a cell phone overseas, but this is going to be our third trip to Europe in the past three years and with what happened to Diana on our last cruise, this would have been really good to have.

Just caught this reply Don.. I guess since their company is based in UK that is why you get a UK #. In any event you get one and it is yours - so you can give it out just like you would your home cell.. "My # in Europe is..la dee da"... It is a breeze to use. If you just happen to be in the UK then no roaming charges ..everywhere else it works in the world it is just whatever per minute that they charge ( I think 1.25 US or something like that).. it just does come in very handy.

We paid for portable internet when we went out to sea, which was absolutely useless. If there is no land in sight, you'll be lucky to get coverage. Which asks the question, what use are all them satellites hovering around the Earth?
We even paid ridiculous daily charges for on board internet, which didn't even work.
So the best bet is to prepare yourself for a holiday with no phones or internet. Back to basics.
