The thing about the pearls is that it's really best to buy them loose, and have them set when you get back to the States. Gold is very expensive in Tahiti. You can work with a vendor to pick the right pearls for a particular kind of ring, or perhaps work with a jeweller at home, before you go.
We also had the "NBP" mantra going in 2000. But we came back with a modest pair, which I had made into earrings. I love them.
Wait until you see the natives wearing their pearls. Everywhere, they are just everyday jewellery!
