I don't know anything about Avios either, but our BA taxes on our trip booked with AA miles were refunded immediately when I cancelled the trip with AA. I did have to call (couldn't do online) because of the trip being some segments on AA and some on BA. You can cancel online, but you can't get your miles back to your account or get your taxes refunded without actually calling them.
