Also, I prefer soft sided luggage, I can't even pick up hard sided when they are empty! Since they weigh about twice as much as soft sided, you are using one of your alloted 50lbs of luggage just on the suitcases themselves. I just make sure I pack of the smashables (shampoo, etc) in the carry on.
