The benefit of a private tour is that it can be cheaper, but more importantly you see what YOU want to see and can adjust the timing and itinerary. When we have strong opinions or friends who have the same desires, we often opt for private tours.
Denise, if I remember correctly, you had a good experience in Santorini too with a private guide. We took a taxi to Oja and really enjoyed that.
