Hi Jan,

Hotel Ala www.hotelala.com 3 stars hotel

I stayed there some years ago but since then they have refurbished it and it gets very good reviews... Check them at www.tripadvisor.com

A short walk from St Marks square. It's now part of Best Western chain. I seem to recall it was next to Bauer Grunwald. Has a vaporetto stop by it ( I remember well; I took it on my way from the airport with all my luggage. No money then for a water taxi! )

Jan,

Tony and I loved the Concordia.
www.hotelconcordia.com

Excellent location, only hotel that overlooks San Marco.

Rooms are gorgeous and bathrooms are nice and modern. Nice breakfast served.

Not much of a lobby though.

Another popular choice is the Flora - though I've never stayed there, I've heard very good things about it.

Jan,

You didn't say when you're visiting Venice and the rates are hugely seasonal. In Februrary this year (obviously no on a cruise) we stay at the Cavalletto E Doge Orseolo, a Best Wern affiliate so you can book it through them. Hotel info at: http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwestern/productInfo.do?propertyCode=98116.

In February (low season) it was about 120 Euros per night for a gondola basin overlook room, breakfast included (on a fully prepaid rate). The location is fantastic...literally over a foot bridge off of St. Marks Plaza. The aforementioned gondoal basin is the one serving the Plaza. The hotel is historic, but nicely maintained.

Their rates can double or more depending on when you go.
