Well we are planning things associated with the upcoming Rome to Athens on Silversea on the 9th of November. Regarding Rome to Civitavecchia - the last time I did this we took a Van (thank you Karen for arranging) - I just noticed that the hotel we are staying at in Rome is about 4 blocks from the Central Train Station - Has anyone done this to Civitavecchia? I read at the other end in Civitavecchia it is about 2 miles to the port where the ship will be docked. Will there be taxis readily available to get us to the Ship?

We had a day in Civitaveccia on a cruise and took the train into Rome. The station is not far from the port gates and there are plenty of taxis.Lots of ferries also leave from the port.
However the port is vast with intertwining roadways to where the ships are docked. The port also has a free shuttle, which seems to arrive as it pleases, and then visits every ship in port dropping passengers on the way.
The ship may also provide its own shuttle, provided you know where the pick up is.

Todd,

I did it a few years ago. Trains are cheap and run regularly (at least once an hour), but my experience at the other end was a little different from David's. There was a stand to call a taxi at the Civitavecchia station, but no waiting taxis. We waited with another couple for close to 30 minutes and ended up sharing the lone cab that finally pulled up.

There were no elevators or escalators at the Civitavecchia station (at that time anyway) so we had to haul our big bags up a couple flights of stairs (which led to many harsh words about the number of shoes I had packed). So be fore-warned...

Suzanne-

It does not sound like a pretty way to start an ultra-luxury cruise - kind of what I thought. We did get a quote of EU149 for 2 couples - perhaps we will do that instead. Thank you for your input. Love that pic too Suzanne!

I didn't think it was too big a deal, and my wife doesn't like to be "surprised". The dock is about 1/2 mile and it is a neat town (relatively) to walk through down to the port. While a taxi may be fine, assuming your luggage has wheels, you would be fine. Everyone seemed friendly enough to tell you how to get there. And the train was way cheaper, even for 4 people, than the Van. I always look at savings like this as monies to be used for massages on board!
