Found this web site in a travel magazine. Kind of interesting to read. www.thebathroomdiaries.com Takes about the restrooms tourists have come across while traveling.

Fun! I liked the one with the spread newspaper on the floor of the train in Thailand. :)

A few years back, while cruising in Asia we met a couple who photographed the bathrooms everywhere we went - their collection from that part of the world was somewhat unusual (as you might guess) - anyway we got into the habit of scouting for good shots for them! I'll have to check the link - perhaps they contribute to the collection!

My first trip to Europe was with my parents when I was in 7th grade. As I would be missing one full month of the school year I was asked to present some sort of social studies "project" when I returned to class.

I collected toilet paper from virtually every toilet (or lack thereof) I came across. The quality ran from burlap colored crepe paper to sheer waxed paper, to the infamous local newpaper to a cornhusk. I think I got an A for my collection which I had labeled with dates and locales.

I don't remember any of those which I have visited. I just go in, shed a tear, or whatever, and leave. There are several poems and notices which I remember ;-

"Will depositors at this bank kindly refrain from leaving their change on the counter."

"If you tinkle when you sprinkle plese be neat and clean the seat."

" If here you come to heed nature's call
don't start writing on the wall.
If it's here you come to show your wit
you only shine where others....."
In the old days in England, when we had to put a
penny in the slot to use the sitdown variety, there was a remark posted by someone - "Here I am brokenhearted , I paid a penny and only fa...d"
Cheerio.

I create my own bathroom nightmares.
In Grand Cayman, I went into the bathroom and didn't notice the row of urinals on my way in. I had to spend 15 minutes in the stall until all the boys left so I could escape.

In Aruba at the airport, when I flushed, the whole toilet fell over.

If I remember correctly, when visiting Ephesusian (made up word) bathrooms in Turkey, you have to pay for the toilet paper on the way in.

Years ago, there was a book locating toilets in New York City called "Dear John". I always loved the title and probably have a copy somewhere on my book shelf. It's a BIT outdated - Bonwit Tellers was in it. Dates me too!

Karen, Your stories are funny. I heard that you have to pay for toilet paper on the way in in Russia also. They say an old woman sits at a table and sells you 2 pieces of paper. Yikes! What an adventure. When we were in Italy in 2000 we visited a large cameo factory across from Pompei and in this very modern building there was a hole in the floor you had to straddle. I don't know how old people or ones that are a little unsteady on their feet do it. I just thought that site was interesting. i think it was in Travel & leisure magazine this month. I can't wait to see what Russia has to offer!

That is how is works in Wgypt. The women stand outside the stall door & hand you a few sheets as you go in - if you pay that is. And in Russia - take a small travel size kleenex packet with you.

Robert -

For what it's worth, it isn't always easier for you guys. On our trip to Africa, we stopped at a "rest area" between parks. Waiting in line, a woman passed me and said "If anyone figures out which way to face, let me know." Well, by this time we're figuring these bathrooms are going to be a bit odd. Then, just as I enter the ladies room, I hear a guy over the divider between the ladies room and the mens room. "Just what are we supposed to do here, pee against the wall?" I asked Todd about it later. Apparently, as near as the guys could figure out, that was the urinal - the base of the wall. They were all quite put out about having to have a conversation in the men's room to figure it out. Apparently, that is NOT the done thing in a mens room. As Todd rather huffily informed me, "you keep your eyes forward and you do NOT converse with the man standing next to you." :)

At least we women had a hole in the ground. :D

All kidding aside, our Africa trip changed forever the way I look at public restrooms. I haven't complained about a US restroom in years!
