I keep getting double posts, under the circumstances where my "add reply" is "timed out" and I am instructed to click on "RELOAD" on my control bar. When I do, I get a double post, and the mechanics of this board do not provide a way for me to delete #2. I have too little life expectancy left for me to hope that computer technology will ever be perfect in my lifetime! Therefore, I request that the moderators and "powers that be" consider allowing a poster to delete his/her own post. Thanks, Richard

When you time out, don't obey the "click on reload" instructions. Just leave the board completely, and re-enter. I've found that out the hard way.

Richard, I wonder why you are timing out in the first place??

KarenS: I do not know. I have broadband cable, AOL, and a rather powerful CPU. I don't have this problem on other boards and forums, such as the Mercedes Club or S2000 Club (though the latter is "under construction"). I will however note that the last two mentioned boards WILL allow me to delete a post of my own for any reason --- including "it just don't sound right." Thanks. Richard

Karen, I time out on this board, too; it's really slow for me and I have the same type equipment Richard has. It just happens..

Maybe it's an AOL related problem? I noticed on the new CC board, AOL users are having a heck of a time.

Me too. Sometimes it takes five minutes to make a post. I'm using a dailup where I am but I have had the same problem using a high speed conection. If I want to take back a post I just edit out the text leaving it blank. It would be nice though to be able to delete your own post.

KarenS: Strangely, I am NOT having the same problem on the CC board. I think the problem there is with older versions of AOL, and we have the most current version. Thanks, Richard

I will check into this problem over on the help board. Since it doesn't happen to me I was unaware of the problem! I can imagine how annoying it is to time out all the time.

KarenS: In the interest of clarity for problem solving, I'm not getting a "timed out" message, I'm getting a "site not responding" message. In addition, this message doesn't take that long to appear ---- maybe a minute or less. So my reference to being "timed out" was not correct "computerese". Also, at times (like now) when the site does work, it is seeming to take longer to bring pages up than I experience on other sites. This may or may not be related. Thanks, Richard

I have a cable connection and am finding this site to be very slow to load and slow when I change areas of the site. I'm not having problems with any others so not sure what is going on. I thought it was my own problem but maybe not. Maggie

Odd, I have a T1 at work and a cable modem at home and I have never had a delay with this board. I do not go thru AOL but will try and see if I have any problems.
The LCT board always loads very quickly for me.

It does appear that the majority of people who are having problems are on AOL, which just might be a coincidence. Here is a suggestion as to what might be our problem from the help board but I am hoping that since we just upgraded our server that there might be another problem other than what Ian suggested.
KarenS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some members are reporting that after they add a reply that they are timing out and the are instructed to refresh. When they do so, they are getting double posts.
Here is a link to the message describing what is happening to them. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ian Spence
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your site just feels slow, takes a while to download a page, and it takes a while before it even starts sending me the page.
Apparently, the server you run it too slow, and their browser gives up cause it takes so long. The browser tells them to refresh, which resubmits the post. Since it took a while before the browser gave up, there's little chance floodcheck would pick up on this.
The only real solution is to get a faster server
Maybe I will have John take a look around and see what he thinks.

I DON'T have AOL and I've noticed problems like others have noticed - slow loading time on occasion with LCT. Some days seem better than others. And it's fine with other boards. I figured it was the server as well but can't complain since Ngaire's funding this. :) Speaking of which, is there anything we can do to help with funding this site?

I have AOL but also cable modem at home and at the office. Pretty sure it goes through IE to access the web. It is slower to load than the other sites I hang around between working.

My DSL has been slow for me for 2 days Robert, so all the sites have been a bit slow...Karen said the same thing. But I don't have the "timed out" problem that Richard describes. I use Netscape as opposed to AOL....I am just glad and a bit surprised that it isn't a Mac problem! ;) :D

The only really, really reliable service is my cable connection at home. I wanted to get satelite until I was told the "box" thingy was $500!! I'll wait till they come down some... I don't time out either just takes a bit for the pages to load.

For what it may be worth, I am having no trouble with this board now. Don't know what happened before, and would like to re-state that I was not getting a "timed out" message (my bad) but was getting a "site not responding" message. When I had the problem, it was with this board only. I frequent some car related boards, and am even a moderator on the Mercedes Benz Club board. When this board was not responding, the other boards were just going "zip-zap!" Glad all is OK for me now.
If the "powers that be" have not found a reason for this, I suggest that maybe the servers don't have enough power to handle peak times. Success can bring its own problems!!
Thanks, Richard :lct:

This is very speedy today for me too. Perhaps Saturdays just aren't as busy? I have cable, and don't use AOL. As Richard said, all other sites load quickly. This seems to be the only "lazy guy!"

I am not a "techie" so I cant really answer any of these technical questions. However, to my knowledge when we changed servers we went with something Ken and John called a Virtual Server and it is supposed to be very fast. We looked at many options but thought this would be the way to go because we needed download speed due the graphics we all use. May have what I am saying here a little wrong but it is a large server, lots of disc space and lots of bandwidth (for graphics to load) and dedicated to our boards. We did not chose a less expensive server. We went with something we thought was "far more than required" to operate the board efficiently.
As much as we love the graphic Voyager background and all the graphics we post these also take longer to load. I honestly think this is the issue here, too many graphics particularly the background. Ken is ALWAYS telling me this but I LOVE the graphics and I dont think any of us want to give those up. It is what makes the board so interesting. From my "non technical brain" when we load pictures to a link like we do that does not interfere at all with the download speed of this site. It is the icons and background and actual graphics directly on our site that take the time. So dont worry about posting links to pictures that works great.
So if for any reason the internet is slow you will find this type of slow loading taking place. When things speed up you wont have the same problems. I know Ken did not do anything and I dont think John has either so it is just the "computer" gremlins at work sometimes.
A board like this runs quite differently from a normal web site. Lots of things are complicated and more difficult than a standard web site. Adding that "button" for live chat was a major issue and we could not do it. Ken spent almost a whole day trying to get this worked out. Karen and I dont quite understand why but Ken and John both said it would interfere with the "code" of the board and could mess everything up if we tried to add a button.
On this last trip the group said the name Luxury Cruise TALK is a problem. Office computers wont allow it to load as it has TALK in the title. I asked Ken if we could change the name. I guess it is not simple like a regular web site. We cant just buy a new domain name and start again. We would be down for days again just like we were when we changed to the new name. Each time you do this you risk losing information and encountering other problems. Hence a lot of the problems Cruise Critic has had. Now I understand all that a little more.
Life is so much easier on a standard web site. All the technical "stuff" drives me nuts sometimes.
As to Amanda posting. Ken wont post either. He will when we are on a ship and egging him on but here at home he does not post. Some of us are posters and some arent I guess.

A "VIRTUAL SERVER" is a part (properly, a partition or logical segment) of a physical server, or 'real' computer system being used to serve a network (or other function, e.g., print server). What I gather is that Webmaster (and Tech Guru) Ken has partitioned their server to handle multiple functions, one of which is "Luxury Cruise Talk".
The other element that is most likely partitioned into two or more "virtual" parts is the internet connection they use. For example, lets say Brown & Keene has a T-1 connection to the internet. That is 1.544 mega-hertz, just over one and a half million cycles (=hertz) per second, also equal to 24 voice connections or 24 dial-up internet connections simultaneously! Some part of this most likely dedicated to "Luxury Cruise Talk". Just so people know, this is not an inexpensive proposition, and is a real and substantial contribution to our communication with one another.
And that is totally enough from this prof today!
[size=8]Too Many To List - 416 days & counting on Radisson/Regent, and 150+ days on 8 other lines, with one cruise booked next month on the Mariner, Miami to Honolulu 22 days

Wow Michael. See why a simple non techie like me cannot understand the computer language. Ken talks to me in terms like this also and I think he is from Mars.
Maybe the term Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus should be updated to include Techies and Non Techies!!!!
I am proud of myself for simply being able to post gremlins now and do my web site.
