It's a cool night here in SD. I am just so glad to be here. There were more problems but Regent steps up. Leno is in two and a half hours and I am munching on the best Strawberries I have ever had.
I've been on Crystal and Silverseas and this cabin beats them by far. This is a nice ship, not that big but it has a lot of character. Tv quit but they will fix that, apparently that has happen to a number of cabins. Who needs TV anyway with this view of San Diego.

Leno was a treat and the Beach Boys something very special. Some young surfer girls got up on stage and danced with them. With dreamy eyes. The sound system is really good also. Leno talked for an hour, there was no TelePrompTer. He doesn't miss beat. No mention of the networks. I am going to bed.

I love it. These suites are big. Can get fresh salmon and cold shrimp at 3 from Room Service. Today it's cloudy and cool and being that it's breakfast time I am off. More later.

Here is the first twist, the Captain has decided to change time zones a half hour at a time. So we will be an half hour off world time half the time. I bought a new Sekio World Time Watch for this trip and it's absolutely useless because it sets to the top of the hour.

Does Regent does this with all it's ship? I am sorry this is the most ridiculous thing I have heard of.

If I was out at sea for 6 days on the vast Pacific Ocean, aboard the beautiful Voyager, at the onset of a grand, around-the-world adventure, I would take my wristwatch off and wouldn't care less what time it was.

Warren, we've done this quite a few times on cruises going both East and West and it is a good thing. It's easier on your body to adjust. The only time that should matter to anyone on board is ship time.

Karen I've been on a lot cruises. I know. It's just I bought this great watch and I can only use every other day. Have a cheap Timex by luck so I can use that.

It's just that I am a pilot and this concept is not computing. Otherwise I just had my first massage, the Canyon Ranch People are very good.

There may be a revolt at the Captain's welcome party by engineers with atomic watches where the minute hand is set to GMT. I tried to find a way to change mine but there is no way.

Warren, if that half hour off the clock is the most ridiculous thing that happens, I think you are in for a great cruise! We look forward to some fun stories from you about life onboard and in the ports in the weeks ahead.

Please put up with me as I am a navigation geek. I have already plotted the coarse using old aviation charts. Enough of that, I just had a delightful dinner in Compass Rose. This is the only formal night for awhile and the food here is simply to die for. What a day, hopefully it will be warm tomorrow.

It's a Citizen World Time Watch. It sets itself to the radio signals to GMT. When you change time zones you set it to those zones in the display. You can't change the minute hand except in hour increments.

I have a cheap Timex I will wear that on the off days. But I'm serious when I say there are a few with watches like this and there will be confusion. It was a big topic at dinner last night.

But, Warren, as I am sure you know there are actually time zones that are 15 minutes and 30 minutes apart, not just 1 hour increments globally. See the map around India and sailing across the Indian Ocean...
http://www.worldtimezone.com/
So, whether the Captain set the time changes for the ship this way or not, you would have had to deal with the flaw in the watches. Actually, I do see it as a design flaw in the watches, because in reality time zones are not only in 1 hour increments. That is just the way the world runs. Sorry, I know you must have been really looking forward to giving your new watch a workout! Also, if I may say, having done a world cruise, I believe at some point you will find yourself adrift from the world and settle in to not really being concerned with the exact time anywhere except on the ship! Soon, the only time you will find yourself worrying about synchronizing your watch with the local time zone will be when you are ashore and by then it will be a strange thing to worry about! Enjoy your cruise, Debbie

Yes, for example Newfoundland has a half-hour incremented time zone from the rest of maritime Canada.

Thanks for the map Debbie. That's pretty detailed, I'm glad I brought a cheap Timex along. Now if I can just find a weather forecasting site. I know about about Oceanweather and the Weatherunderground Marine but I would like to know how the bridge gets their weather.

It' a sunny day, 66 and this is great.

Warren, a great way to get special invitations is to ask questions. So, ask at the Reception Desk or Concierge Desk or whatever it is they have these days in the lobby atrium "How does the bridge get their weather information?" The person you ask won't know of course, but they should pass your question on to the person who does know and beyond getting an answer frequently that will lead to an introduction and possibly an invitation to a demonstration of whatever you are querying. At least that has been my past experience on RSSC long voyages. Good luck, Debbie

Warren,

Maybe I'm missing something but on days between time zones when the ship's clocks are turned back 30 minutes, why not just set the ship's time on your Citizen watch manually? :D

Can't it's an atomic clock. Maybe when I get the internet for free I'll try to download the 50 page manual.

I wonder what time it is on the bridge? Standardized time was developed to keep moving things from running into each other in the 19th century. I am going ask Charlie Duke if this drives him nuts to since he too spent his life flying. ( a lot higher than I ever got)

Actually I am listening to my shortwave radio on the veranda. My personal favorite is the Voice of North Korea. The Dear Leader sends his greetings.

Warren -- I just think you are jealous of Capt Dag. Look at the power he has. He alone can decide what time it is. And if you want to find out how they tell time on the bridge, go up on deck 10 and visit, I was there this afternoon, but had not read thisd thread or could have asked. I would bet that they use GMT.

BTW, for those who are counting, there are currently 418 passengers and 449 crew onboard.

Larry, I'm going to ask reception about the bridge tours. I didn't know since most other lines won't let you near the bridge. Rest assured once I find out the real story I will shut up, start drinking and napping Like I am supposed to do

Larry I am in 937 lets have dinner one night.

Thanks Larry. You can wonder up to the bridge between 1 and 3. What a view. There is something special about looking forward. On the other cruises I have been on they won't let you anywhere near the bridge. I like the Ferrari emblem on the steering wheel.
