Our Baltic Cruise will be docked at Warnemunde ( the port for Berlin) - it is very near Rostock. Is there any transportation to Rostock and any thing of interest there?? i was also thinking one might rent a car there for a visit into the German countryside. We do not want an 11 hr. excursion to Berlin so need some other options. Anyone have any suggestions??

Just got back and I personally would recommend staying in Warnemunde. We actually took the train to Rostock, but it was just another town to me. The train is very close to the ship. You can use euros to buy a roundtrip ticket and it wasn't too expensive. You do have to make one change of train, but it was easy and took less than 20 minutes. However, I thought Warnemunde was much more interesting. It is actually a seaside resort where many of the Germans go for holiday. It is within walking distance of the port. It has a cute canal that runs along with shops, food vendors, etc. There is also a very long white sandy beach, but the water was too cold for me. We just sat, had a drink, and enjoyed the view along the sea.

It is about 20 minutes. You actually take a train and then a trolley to get to Rostock. It isn't hard at all. We got off in the main center and then walked around the town. It is small but in my opinion not much to see. Others from the ship voiced the same opinion. Some said they had a nice lunch, but since we were so close to the ship I just went back for lunch. I will check on "Milli and the Minister" and let you know what I find out. I did speak with one couple that rented a car and drove the countryside that said they enjoyed it.

Our Baltic cruise stopped at Warnemunde. We took the ship's excursion to Rostock and I agree with Susan that it was just ok. Their was a street fair on the day we toured which made it more fun.
I did enjoy walking around Warnemunde, visiting the shops and just "looking". If I had to do it over again, I would forget Rostock and spend all my time in Warnemunde.
And, Anaclaire, we didn't want to do an 11hr excursion to Berlin either. Turned out that we made the right choice as the bus was involved in a traffic accident in Berlin...no injuries but delayed the return to the ship and 11hrs turned into even longer!
Enjoy your trip.

You asked about the Molli and the Minster shore excursion. I am sorry I don't have any personal information but I didn't know if you had seen the following write-up. "Boarding your deluxe motorcoach on the pier, you begin your relaxing and romantic countryside tour driving through the typical flatland landscape of former East Germany to the town of Bad Doberan. On the way you pass several small villages displaying the great changes that came after reunification in 1990, rich farmlands and quite a number of wind-parks producing electricity from huge wind-power-stations.
Stopping in Bad Doberan, your first highlight is the 700-year-old Minster, constructed of red bricks. You will have a half hour inside visit, plus a stroll through the beautiful park which surrounds this lovely church. Inside the church, treasures from the 14th and 15th centuries such as the Rochus and the Cross Altar as well as a masterpiece wooden statue of St. Mary, leaves visitors in silent admiration. With its strong city walls protecting the entire town, the Minster once was a bishop's seat, then a center of religious and military power.
Close to the Minster you will reach the train station of the Molli and enjoy a ride on this historic narrow gauge steam train. The approximately 35-minute ride from Bad Doberan to Kühlungsborn creates a special atmosphere, with the historic cars being pulled by an antique steam locomotive. Passing lush fields of corn the ride takes you along Europe's oldest avenue of lime-trees to the beach resort of Kühlungsborn. A romantic experience, once installed by royalty as a "summer hobby".
At Kühlungsborn, famous for its architecture and beautiful beach, you will disembark the Molli and take a refreshment break at a seaside café. Enjoy a piece of typical home made German cake with a cup of coffee or tea in one of the historic buildings on the romantic beach promenade. There will be time for a short stroll along the promenade before boarding the motorcoach. On the return transfer you will drive through Heiligendamm. This beach resort is famous for its numerous white houses from the early 1900s, in the reign of German Emperor Wilhelm II."

Thanks so much Susan - I could not pull up the Molli & Minister information. Don't know why - how do you get the descriptions of the excursions? Still would like to rent a car and go to Wismer & Schwerin but think it will be too much of a hazzle. Appreciate your help. Jan

I spoke with someone I knew that had taken the Molli and Minster shore excursion. She said she really enjoyed it, but I am sorry she wasn't more specific. If you go to rssc.com and click on ships, then calendar, then August 20, then port and excursions, then Waremunde, then Molli & Minster, the whole description will appear. Hope that helps.
