Jan and I are almost home from our March 7-18 trip to FP and the PG. We are at my parents to get our daughter and will be home this afternoon. I'll be able to post more when we actually get home, remind our girls what we look like, and get some laundry and grocery shopping done!

I do want to say that it was such a pleasure to meet Melissa (and her husband Mark) and Luke and his family. They are all wonderful people. I would love to be able to take 3 generations on an adventure like this when our children are older like Luke did. I am anxious to read your trip reports guys!

Waves? Where? My son loves waves and I already told him there weren't any in French Poly. b/c of the reefs! He'll be thrilled to have some at least one day.

We saw LARGE waves (and the accompanying surfers) in Moorea last week ... they break right at the reefs bordering the islands' lagoons.

Sue~ There were huge bodysurfing waves at the beach behind the radisson. This is where the day room is!!

Can you easily get out to them, though? (we won't be surfing just playing/body surfing/inflatables) I remember when I was on the islands the waves crashed pretty far out, farther than you could swim. I do want to bring my 14 yr old home. LOL!

Sue, these waves were right off the beach! It is a beautiful black sand beach. They may even have boogy boards at the pool stand but if not he can just run into the waves!!!

Yeah - the waves crash right on the beach at the Radisson. My wife was just planning on wading into the surf a little bit while Melissa and I were talking on the shore. Next thing we know, there is a big wave crashing over her that knocked her down. She had black sand everywhere imaginable. We were still cleaning black sand out of her ears last night when we got home!

There is lots of surfing in FP, lots of surfing culture.

Body surfing at the Radisson hotel is definitely a possibility, I've seen the local kids doing it, or on boogey boards. But the real surfing takes place further out, outside of the lagoon, on Moorea, Raiatea, etc., so I think if you wanted to do that, you'd have to find somebody to take you out past the lagoon.

I just did a search over at tahiti-explorer.com, on "surfing", and some hits, so you could do the same. One theme is that renting boards is difficult, so you might have to bring your own, which may not be an option!

Oh, I have also seen kite boarding several times, both on Moorea, and between Raiatea and Taha'a. Now that looks like an exciting sport!
