WOW! You see the emergency cards in the seat back front pockets with the instructions on how to evacuate....but those pics really put it in perspective. Thanks Chip!

Ditto Todd. I'm always pleased to sit in an exit row, blissfully thinking that it'll never happen.

This was in Bangkok last week. My daughter was on the flight took these pictures after taking the slide ride of her life. One of the plane's engines took a bird strike at near takeoff speed. See Airline mishap tread below for more.

Chip....
I hate to ask questions about this sensitive issue, but when they go over the evacuation procedures, they always indicate leave your personal items behind.....so did this happen on this evacuation and how did the passengers get their personal items back and when?

There is a thread in the United forum at FlyerTalk, started by a man who was also on the flight. They did tell them to leave their personal items behind. He said that United personnel went through and gathered them all up (after the scare was over) and delivered them to the passengers in about an hour and a half.
That would be tough, since Mark travels with insulin and syringes.

B747 - greatest airplane that ever flew - certainly the strongest! I remember a flight into either SFO or LAX where the pilot didn't see a NOTAM (Notice to all Mariners) about construction at the end of one of the runways - he landed his airplane but in the process, a bogie (landing gear) hit a 9 foot wall of dirt - the plane just punched it's way through the dirt, and the aircraft landed normally. After Xray examination, the airplane was declared fit to fly! It'll stay aloft on 1 engine (sink a bit though) maintain altitude with 2 engines working, and with 3 engines, it'll fly just like with 4 fully operational engines - just not as fast.
So, I'm glad everyone got out okay - but it's strictly business as usual with this airplane - a truly magnificent Boeing product.

Marty - that must have been one bumpy landing though with the plane plowing through the 9 foot wall of dirt ... :) Agree about the 747.
