Just received our cruise docs for our first Regent cruise. I was surprised that boarding is listed as 3:00 pm since everything I had read previously led me to believe that boarding would be from 12:00 to 1:00. We're boarding in Athens. Does anyone have experience there?

sassy, I do not know about boarding in Athens, but all the Regent cruises we've been on, we've usually boarded around 1:00p.m. But expect that your cabin will not be available until 3:00.

I think it always lists a later time in the docs, we just all show up early ;)

Karen, you are right on, as usual.
Some of us just can't wait to get on the ship and maximize our time. Although it depends what you're doing prior to boarding--if you were somewhere with lots to do, I could easily imagine boarding later.
But for our first non-PG cruise (you can't really board before 3 there), we took the advice to appear around 12-1. We couldn't wait to explore the ship and revel in our good judgement in booking such a great cruise!

Thanks for the input. Has anyone shown up between 12:00 and 1:00 and had to wait before boarding? DH is never happy about waiting to board and I want to schedule our transfer to the ship so he can get on board with minimal wait time.

It happened to us last December in Fort Lauderdale boarding Navigator. It was just out of a re-fit, and they were doing lots of last-minute cleanups, even after we boarded. We had to sit in a lounge (with a glass of champagne), and wait for about 45 minutes. If we had known, we would have just waited and boarded later.

Yes, maybe twice in the last 10 cruises we could not board until the official time. One of these times, the ship was late getting to port and the other time I really don't know what the reason was. (Wendy, I think it was the SAND cruise I am remembering that we had to all wait together in the boarding area for several hours?)
I guess you can never tell for sure that you will be able on early so maybe you would want to wait until the official time?

Yes, it was SAND, but I think it was no more than an hour. Next time I'll go for a walk on the beach instead, but the weather was really windy in FLL that day, remember? There wasn't much to do after we checked out of our hotel.

Yes, I think it was an hour or so. Seemed like a long time. I guess 'cause we were eager to get on that ship. They were loading all those Christmas decorations, remember?

Yes, I do! I had forgotten, they were very pretty, it was a nice touch having the trees up, even though it wasn't quite Christmas yet.

At FLL, (01/09/07), we had to wait for over an hour before they would allow us to board. Said it was something to do with customs and security. Once the gate opened it did not take long to board. Have heard this a number of times from different people on different cruises.

I appreciate the advice. I think I will schedule my transfer later in the afternoon to be safe. We've been sailing Silversea for the past few years and use their early boarding option. I wish Regent had something like that!

The other issue to be aware of is simply the location of your embarkation. We boarded in Athens (pireaus) a few years ago, and while the process with Regent (then Radisson) was smooth and gracious, the port was in chaos due to several ships boarding at the same time, a strike, and other problems. Of course once we stepped on to the ship it was perfection all the way!
