Not for Ken, I refuse to take a jacket on a trip like this. You can if you like as there will be men in jackets but it is NOT necessary. That 44lb limit per person and 18lb ONE piece of hand luggage for Air Greenland has my attention. I am taking far more clothes than normal with no laundry and the laundry will always be busy. Then you need warm stuff, day time stuff and night stuff. So no jacket will be in our suitcases.
Actually the Venetian society was not a big deal if anyone wore a jacket it was the Welcome aboard dinner.

Thanks, so there will be at least two of us without coats. Does Air Greenland average across the two passengers (e.g., one 50 and one 38)? 17.6 lbs for carryon will be tough; we will have the heavy stuff in the computer bag. Just saw this limitation on additional carry on: In addition to your cabin baggage
Onboard you can of course also have: Taxfree goods bought onboard or at the airport A small handbag or notebook An overcoat A small camera or pair of binoculars Reading matter Umbrella or walking stick I wonder if computer bag counts as notebook? I think we are going to have to get suitcases down soon to start packing; getting close!

No there will be four of us without sport coats. Neither Brayden nor I will have a sport coat.
Bags will be interesting. I may have to pay for an extra bag. Need to take a bag that is a normal carryon size in addition to the checked bag as I have a super tight connection from ANC to YVR where I am meeting June and staying with friends in BC for three weeks. A checked bag would never make the plane. Brayden will take home my bag that has all the cruise cold weather gear. Will try to carry on for the flight to Greenland. The plane is a good size plane and should have normal bag compartments that my carryon will fit into.
Having a hard time waiting for Thursday and the start of this adventure. I am ready to go now. Packed over the weekend.
Looking forward to seeing everybody.

I am so excited for all of you, and can't wait to hear more now that we had such wonderful commentary from Ngaire on Discoverer! Hope some others who are not on the roll call and don't normally post will join in as well. Means a lot for those waiting for our next cruise.

No sport coat for Russ.
His camera bag is so heavy, guess we will wait and see. Ask for forgiveness instead of permission is my plan
See you on Thursday. Let's go.
We are having lunch with John and Pricilla in Dallas for Mexican food before we catch our plan on Thursday. That will be a good start to a great trip.

Funny, I am meeting my brother and a friend for mexican Wednesday night. Must get that mexican fix as I do not expect we will get that on the cruise. Camera bag is heavy, I also plan to just ask for forgiveness if caught. Will act like the back pack with the camera and lens ,computer etc are not heavy. LOL.
Will try to check in for a desert at the dinner once we are checked in at the hotel. This going to be the best ever.

I thought I had read somewhere that there are binoculars in all the cabins on Silver Explorer; now I can't find that information on either Silversea or B&K website. Ngaire or anyone else, can you confirm binoculars so we can save the weight?

I do not think there are binoculars in the standard cabins Marc, only in the suites but I am not 100% sure. We were in a Silver Suite on the Explorer and the binoculars were heavy and not good.
I would consider bringing your own you will need them for South Africa as well.
As to how strict Air Greenland will be - who knows. Often one agent does not worry and another agent "goes by the book".
We struggled with the weight too but I think we are in the limits now. Ken's cameras in his normal carry on bag are 35 lbs. Usually more than our checked big bags weigh. Putting more items in the checked luggage than we normally do, absolutely no clothes or toiletries in the carry on. All that is in there are any medicines we have to have and camera and computer items. If we lose our luggage (as we so often do) we are really going to be struggling may have to wear the camera straps!
If that luggage is lost it is going to be speedy shopping in Copenhagen for bare bones survival. No "shops" along the way on this trip..

Lets hope that all the luggage gets to CPH. From that point should not be an issue. I decided to find a way to get the waterproof pants in the back pack with camera gear as that is one of the clothes items that is essential. There may be the possibility of getting a few items in the K town in Greenland.
When I looked it up, if I remember correctly the plane to greenland is an airbus 330 which is fairly big. I expect that the overhead storage areas should carry quite a bit. I did check the flight to try and see what the load factor was and the web site said no seats available. I would expect almost everyone on the cruise is on the same flight. Yes, I think my back pack with camera gear weighs over 25 pounds and that is without the Mac air computer. Will be over 30 lbs when completely packed. Should be interesting Sat morning.
Only two sleeps and an airplane ride before CPH and the funs starts.

On our last Explorer expedition there were binoculars in every suite. However they are not the best! Would strongly advise to get a small good pair and take your own. Have a great trip.
Frank.
