I'm thinking of booking a river cruise for 2013, but am stuck between Viking and Avalon... Does anybody have any advice they can give me as to which would be better for me and my partner? We're both in our 20s, and just want to know what the cabins and amenities on-board are like.

Thanks in advance!

Never a failure, but always a lesson.

Hi Katie and welcome to the board! I am sure some of the river cruisers will chime in shortly with their experiences for you.

Have you looked on the Brown and Keene travel site about river cruises? B&K river cruises There was quite a bit of information. We went on an escorted AMA Danube cruise and it was enjoyable. But don't expect a Regent experience. I think about a week is the longest I'd enjoy a river cruise.

I personally would do Avalon over Viking. The new long boats are a big improvement but I think Avalon would be a better choice. That is just my opinion others may disagree.

I would also consider AMA and Uniworld I think those two lines are superior to either Viking or Avalon.

I tried searching for Michael's report and photos on our AMA river cruise but haven't had any luck.

I would highly recommend AMA although my original choice was Scenic, mainly because their newer ships had a balcony. The experience was entirely different to Regent but I loved every moment of it and two weeks wasn't too long.

Scenic is also a very good line should have mentioned that I like their cabins a lot.

How does Tauck compare? Does anyone have experience on that line?

Yes one of the best. Just usually quite a bit more expensive and all inclusive.

While we've not taken a Tauck river cruise, we have taken 3 Tauck land tours and have just deposited for our 4th land tour for 2013. You could not go wrong choosing Tauck. They offer a stellar, upscale experience from start to finish. Several friends have taken Tauck river cruises and have given glowing reviews of their experiences. Tauck may appear to be more expensive, but when you factor in everything Tauck includes, as well as a truly upscale product, Tauck is clearly the winner when it comes to river cruises (and land tours).
