Thanks Doug for adding our names.

I've emailed Baia for a reservation when we're in Cape Town pre ROAR and they have asked us 'do we want a seat outside on the terrace or inside?' What would you recommend as I'm not sure what the temps are at the end of April. Don't forget we are from Queesland!! Love to sit outside but maybe too cold.

Sheila & Ken:

As far as adding you to the roll call, don't thank me. Thank Karen. She is the wizard behind the scene.

as far as Baia goes:
The outside was lovely, but, you are right. It all depends on the weather. Rather than spending lots of time on the internet checking out average temps, why not pop Baia a quick email asking them for a weather prediction.

Sorry to say, but we won't be in Capetown on this trip. Ergo, no Baia for us. Guess we'll have to start planning ROAR IV before we even leave for ROAR 3. (Once you get to bring the 'v's in, the roman numbering system is just so much classier.)
Have an extra main for us!

Yeah, they'll come by and sleep with you, Susan. I understand that there was quite a sad experience at Leopard Hills. There were two cubs born at Leopard Hills that lived by room 8. A rogue leopard came in and recently killed one of them.

Glad that everyone likes the pin!
South African Airways just Tweeted that on next Monday's episode of The Bachelor they will be at Lion Sands. I retweeted it at http://twitter.com/jrodtravels . I don't watch The Bachelor but might record that episode just to see them at Lion Sands.

In case you missed Lion Sands on The Bachelor last night, you can watch the full episode online. I skipped over the mushy parts as I don't watch that show, but it was great to see the animals. I can't believe they let them sit that close to the hippos.
Also, I was disappointed that they didn't show more of the property itself, but I guess the show isn't a discovery channel type show.

Not sure where to post this so I will start here: We have a 12 hour layover in FRA on our way to Roar III. We have an 8 hour layover in MUNICH on the way back. Query: I have never been to either city and am wondering do you, who have been there/done that, think it would be too much physically to book a tour of the City during our layovers? I was going to just book a day room at the Hotel in Frankfurt but now I am thinking all of my flights are essentially overnight and we are Biz class. So altho not really well-rested we should be doing OK when we arrive at each airport. Also is there anything worth seeing within my time contraints? Thanks for any input.

Helen:

A great deal depends on when you arrive in Frankfurt. There are some wonderful walking tours of the city, but they tend to start in the mid to late mornings.
With 12 hours to kill, I would look into getting out of the airport & explore. Just be aware that you will have baggage to deal with (carry on, at least). You will also have extra security checking.

But, YES, go explore! Have a few euros & have some fun!

I saw a company called Tours by Locals and they will meet you at the airport and take you wherever, which is when I started thinking maybe we could do this. I have been on a number of really long flights like this but have never had a layover of more than 3 or 4 hours so this is really the first time I thought maybe we could get out and do something instead of just hanging around the airport but did not know what there is to see/do or how far the airports are from the City. We arrive at 10:30 am and depart at 10:30 pm in Frankfurt. I think we will give it a shot! Thanks, Doug.

We did something close a few years ago in Amsterdam. Stored the luggage & hopped on the train to downtown for lunch and a few hours of sight-seeing.
We had been there before, so it was not totally foreign.
We still laugh, however, how we couldn't find the train at the airport. Signs everywhere, but we just didn't see them.
I now so feel for the folks on The Amazing Race.
Anyway, Helen, plan the time with care & have some fun!

Helen, to ease your mind, the airport is very close to Frankfort. Doug and I stayed even further out than Frankfort in a suburb last year (my corporate headquarters is there) and we spent a day in Frankfurt. You can have a very nice time without rushing or stressing with the time you have. Frankfort is a compact city that is walkable. The museums are located all together and you can do a very nice several hour walking tour of their old town. With both museums and a tour, a nice lunch and dinner, you will have a nice day. Have a great time.

Thanks a bunch. I am going to work it out. I have been to Frankfurt airport (lost everyone's luggage but mine when we changed planes there on our way to catch a Silversea cruise) so nothing new to see there. I will find a walking tour. Thanks again. Where in NYS are you? I am originally from Rockville Centre, LI.

We're from Westchester. Yes, we've lost luggage there too. Frankfurt is a funky airport! I wish I could remember my tour guide. She was very good. I think my hotel arranged it for me. I will put out some feelers to folks in my office to see if they know of any tour guides.

Since we leave in about a month, I was wondering if anyone has received travel docs?
Shouldn't we have them about now? or am I missing something?

Doug,

What documents would you be looking for. I have none except for a document for an extra flight that I have. JNB to CPT on BA. I do not remember getting anything when we did ROAR 2 except maybe something for the hotel in CPT that we are not doing this time.

I expect to be met at CPT airport and taken to Birkenhead. From that point I am in the capable hands of Ngaire and Ken. At least until 5/12.

I haven't received anything yet, not even our air from CPT to JNB to meet up with everyone else.
On ROAR 2 we received a large package with tags and info in them, don't you remember Ralph.
Anything sent from Texas takes well over a week or so to get here, unless you pay for airmail first class. Everything gets bounced around stateside....No one knows where Mississauga is, LOL.
We leave on April 23rd so it's fast approaching for us.

Pat, When do you and Ray arrive CPT. I arrive on BA 6409 from JNB at 12:50pm. Looking forward to Birkenhead and catching up. After the two 11 hour flights plus the JNB to CPT not sure what kind of condition I will be in but after a nice night sleep at Birkenhead will be ready to go. So looking forward to this trip / adventure.

K&D is doing the itineraries on this one and they will be similiar to what you received for NILE. The itinerary and necessary vouchers in the binder. I have been receiving intial drafts and looking them over for the last week. They should be coming out soon.

We have hit some international airlines changes people did not know about and one man had to redo his whole international air itinerary. A few hiccups have held things up a bit.

K&D received the package from Brown and Keene before I left for Kangaroo. This will come with the K&D package and includes what I normally send out, baggage tags, list of people participating and a few small items from Brown and Keene.

I do things early but most tour companies do not so do not worry it is all coming shortly directly from Ker & Downey. I do know that Ray and Pat's are ready to go to print and a few small changes on Ralphs and his will be ready too.

Soon very soon.

FOR THE GROUP THAT WILL BE AT LA RESIDENCE 4/28/TO 4/30---

Somehow as the wino that I am a couple of you have corralled me into looking into restaurants in the Franschoek area. With the help of Ngaire, Eugene and the internet I have come up with some suggestions. My current idea is -
4/28/11 Thursday Reuben's Dinner
4/29/11 Friday La Petite Ferme La Cafe Lunch
4/29/11 Friday Le Quartier Francais " The tasting room

If you google the names you can find the menu and rough idea of the cost. The dinner at the tasting room will be the most expensive and will be at least what a very fine dinning establishment would be in the states. The exchange rate is not good currently as we all know too well.

There would be a maximum of 10 if all joined in. I have sent an email to a oouple of places to find out if they could accomodate us.

Please use the private message to email me your interest and I can then create an email list for the group and not use LCT. For now I needed to use LCT. From the info I have all are LCT posters.
