Are we supposed to contact our cc companies and let them know we'll be in S. Africa?

It would be a good idea. I always call and let them know whenever I travel out of country.

I called. I want to make sure that they realize charges are valid and that number wasn't stolen. I found out that one call to Amex covers all Amex cards.

We normally do this too but forgot before going to So America. No problem though...guess they have us profiled as being out of the country part of each year. Still, it's probably a good idea!

Okay, I called Amex and whichever bank the BA Visa is with (I already forgot). We'll endeavor to use those two cards.

If you ROARers have Capital One this is the best for overseas purchases NO SURCHARGES whatsoever.

There is definitely a 3% foreign charge on my BA USAirways Visa. They list it separately. For Amex, the 2% must be buried in the charges.

Yes, the fees for Amex are bured. I have tons of fun every month at work doing expense reports if someone has traveled internationally. The controllers always want to see the exchange rate.
I believe the Merrill Lynch card through MBNA has no surcharges either.
