We got 2 BC seats, Austin to LA, LA to Auckland than on to Sydney, we leave on the 11th. It was easy, got a lady that was great to work with so we are set for the first part of the trip.

Carolyn - you got BC seats on Air NewZealand?? That's one of the hardest to get of the Star Alliance awards.

Peter - we were not that lucky. We got BC on Qantas. With American booking one way trips now
what would happen if you could not get FF miles on the return trip? One way trips cost lots more $$.

Good for you Carolyn.. When I called they did not have anything for us going out on the 11th.. We are going out of SFO direct to SYD... A day early than we would of liked but then again gives us more time to see Sydney...

Frank I was suprised that they had seats available before we needed to be in Sydney. Most of the time the seats are open after you need to be there, so we were very happy to get our BC seats. See y'all in November.

Be creative - you might have to buy a one-way back to Sydney to pick up the award flight back to the US. Or if nothing works within your timeframe, might be better just to buy the roundtrip and cancel the one way award that you have as a last resort.

We got Biz seats back from Auckland on Dec 3rd. the schedule was a 6:30am flight back to Sydney about 3 hours, then almost an 8 hour layover and then almost 14 hours to SFO, the a direct flight to Boston... Instead of torturing ourselves at the end of what will be a wonderful trip. We decided to book 3 coach class seats and take the direct flight from Auckland to LAX, and Then Onto Boston... The Direct flight leaves at 3:40pm so at least we can enjoy some of the day and relax a bit...

That 6:30 am flight sounded like torture! I'd opt for the 3 seats direct flight, too!

We figured at the end of a long trip, you really want to just kind of get home, and not be hanging around airports for hours on end....

This is a very difficult destination to get award seats. I have done that tortuous route to Sydney hang around for 8 hours more times that I want to admit. Not always business class either we have had to do that to get coach awards.

Smart decision Frank. That extra seat makes all the difference in the world.

Thanks Ngaire!!!! I talked to a nice lady at AA and she had told me the award availability as you stated is very low for the Aust/NZ routes, due to the fact that last minute people actually pay the up to $15k for Biz/First so they need to keep the seats open... amazing....
