Our passports expire in May 09 and we'll be coming off of Samba Dec 08 so we need to renew - my question is do they return your old passport? Our visas, still good, from Brazil are part of old passport and will need that visa stamp for Samba trip

We've received our old passports back, but with a hold punched in the top. I have no idea about the visa, but my guess is that you will be required to get a new visa. Seems unlikely to me that the visa would "crossover" between passports. However, like SO many things on this board, I will learn the answer from others and file it away for future reference.

Joanne,We were told to take the old/outdated passport along with your new one with you as well if you still have more years left on your Brazillian visa.DO NOT CUT or REMOVE the visa from old passport...it will make it null and void. Also I believe you also need a Yellow Fever certificate to enter Brazil.

Refer to this for all the current rules straight from the Brazilian consulate. As I read it, only need Yellow Fever if coming from the countries listed in Q&A #17? This question often arises, and I don't want to get that shot since I am leaving the ship in Rio. A still valid visa in an expired passport is okay. http://www.brazilsf.org/visa_faq_eng.htm

GREAT info. It's wonderful to trade information and LEARN from the LCT group.

Pat, if you read the link, it says visa rules are same for US and Canadian citizens. If you or anyone still has questions, there is an email given at the bottom to answer your particular questions.
Luke, you are right, I have gotten untold amounts of info on this board from other members about everything from travel to what kind of TV or computer or camera to buy!

Thanks jhp I did read it. We had our yellow fever shots in 98 so they expire this year. I do know that I had to fax copies of the shots to our TA this past Feb for our Buenas Aires to Managua Mariner Cruise. Can't remember why we had to have them but back in98 I think it was for South America but I cant be too sure...duh...did I mention I'm a blonde?Have to love this board for inside info.

Pat, nothing to do about being blonde, certainly! This was a question that Neviboy posted when he was going there a long time ago, and didn't want to get the shot! It seems to be a very murky area, especially since you had to fax copies of those shots ust last February! I guess, really, I am trying to find out if I need those shots if I am coming into Rio, and leaving from the same port the next day!

Good morning jhp, somewhere in the back of my mind is that if you have been to a country such as Brazil that you have to show your YF card if you visit certain other countries following being there.Having said that I never had to show my card in other countries. Seems to me that since you're only transiting through Brazil why would you need it. Hey if you do get it at least its good for 10 years!! I figure that my next one(this year) will be my last one,but maybe not since my motto is "have bags will travel"

Olivia, I've discussed the yellow fever shot with Ngaire, since we're getting off at Rio too. It's Regent that requires everyone on the ship have the shots because of difficulties dealing with the Brazilian authorities. According to Ngaire, please correct me if I'm wrong Ngaire, Regent experienced such delays in getting clearance at Brazilian ports that they have gone to a blanket policy of all passengers having proof of the yellow fever shots.

Olivia, the information we got from Jennifer at B&K a while back indicates that if you are disembarking in Rio and not going to the Amazon, the Yellow Fever vaccinations are not required as of Dec, 2007--but it does say that could change. You may want to call Jennifer and get the latest information about that.
