I'm working on a full trip report but just wanted to say how much we enjoyed our "land-cruise" in Belize! It's a beautiful country filled with friendly diverse people and small intimate "mini" resorts. We stayed near Hopkins about 100 miles south of Belize city at Hamanasi dive and adventure resort. It was wonderful and I'd highly recommend it!

Until I get the report and photos posted, if anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask <img border="0" alt="[hula]" title="" src="graemlins/hula.gif" />

Lauri, we look forward to your review. We stayed out on Ambergris Caye for a week a year or so ago--it was one of the most relaxing places we've been (and they had great Mexican food :D ).

Really looking forward to your report, Lauri. Glad you had a great time! Alice and I dove with Colonel Wes at Ambergris Caye one day on a Silversea cruise. Alice has wanted to go back ever since. Is Hamanasi where people go to dive with the whale sharks?

Yes, during the full moon of March, April and May they run trips to the Gladden Spit where the whale sharks come to feed. They had lots of photos, very cool!!

I ended up not diving, just snorkeling 6 times because the snorkeling was incredible! The southern barrier reef is virtually pristine, the water clarity amazing and we went to a different spot each time. Saw tons of beautiful corals, sponges, reef fish, squid, stingrays and spotted eagle rays. I think you and Alice would love Hamanasi.

Squid? Cool! Yeah, I had forgotten that I'd read about the whale sharks and Hamanasi until you mentioned it. Off to read your review! Thanks!

The squid were really cool. Two of them looked to be guarding a certain coral head. They would let me get pretty close to them but not the coral. They kept changing color and they have huge eyes! Fascinating but a bit creepy at the same time.

I agree, watching squid while snorkeling is really cool. Their iridescent colors were beautiful. We were able to do this in the USVI and BVI in the 1970's and early 1990's. That was back in the days before a lot of coral bleaching made an effect on the sea life in that region.

I'm sure I'd love the snorkeling in Belize.
