Just visited CC board and read a post concerning vibrations in cabins in the stern of the Voyager (poster was in cabin 777) Anyone have any experiences with vibrations in H or G Cat cabins. Some posters just love the H cat cabins but they seem to all be located in the stern. Any big vibration problems there? We plan on a 14 day Voyager cruise in April and would not relish a vibrating cabin for such a long cruise. We did experience cabin vibration in the Navigator, a few years back, but it was not a "deal breaker" ( just a bit of an annoyance) Thanks

I am hesitant to discuss this any more, as people are starting to think I am "vibration sensitive"! This is far from the case, as the NAVIGATOR is our favorite ship!
Last April, we were in a Horizon Suite on the Voyager (784)on the stern and directly above the port side pod. Our friends were on deck 9 almost directly above us. At 15 knots or so, vibration was very minor, IMO. But above 20 knots, vibration became serious. At around 22 knots, the vibration became a shaking from side to side. And of course, there were the "rattles" and buzzes." Our friends on 9 had the same problem. But those with suites on the stern which were more to the center or starboard side reported only minor vibrations. Some people avoided the outside dining area on the stern on deck 10 because of the vibrations on some parts of it.
Because I otherwise loved the ship, and felt NO vibration in any other parts of it, I knew it was a ship I would want to take again ---- but with a suite in a different area. So during sea time, I walked around "tracing" where the vibration could be felt in the hall, and where it vanished. On all decks, the vibration diminished as I walked from the Horizon Suite doors toward the bow. By the time I reached the laundry rooms on each deck (or the cooresponding area on decks without laundry rooms)the vibration disappeared.
I understand that this ship has had no dry dock time since we cruised her. Therefore, unless or until I learn that this matter has been corrected, we will book future cruises on this ship only in suites that are forward of the laundry room areas on each deck. this is out of an abundance of caution, as fellow guests on our cruise in some suites near areas where I could feel SOME vibration in the hall said that they could feel no vibration in their suites. But I know from automotive experience that vibrations are difficult to track down in a mechanical device, and can "move around" in the device, depending on conditions.
Bottom line is this. I feel that if one books a suite forward of the laundry room locations on each deck, there should be no vibrations in the suite. Otherwise, there may not be a problem, but there could be one. Therefore, this is the "rule" I'll use when I book another cruise on this ship.
Thanks, Richard :) :) :)

Med4bike: After I boarded the Voyager in June, I asked to have a cabin further forward, as I remember my assigned cabin was near the rear (779, I believe). They accommodated me, gave me a mid-ship suite, and I never felt any vibration at all during the 10 day cruise. I even visited one of the stern cabins on a sea day, and didn't feel it. If you are really vibration sensitive I would recommend that you go further mid-ship just to make sure. Your TA could get you assigned to a particular cabin to guarantee that you will not be bothered. On my two cruises on the Navigator, I felt the vibration more pronounced than the Voyager, particularly in the theater and the Portofino restaurant, but not enough to keep me away from these venues.

Yes, and let me clarify here. I don't think ALL of the stern cabins vibrated on our cruise either. But I couldn't visit all cabins in that area, of course. There were fellow guests with cabins on or near the stern who said they had little or no vibration, and I believe them. Vibrations are very difficult to diagnose, and even more difficult to fix. One suite can have a problem, and the one next to it can have no problem. Then, the area subject to vibration can actually change, from cruise to cruise. And it is not subjective.
All I know for sure is that our suite (784) had excessive vibration and shaking on our cruise, and ditto for the suite on deck 9 above us. If anyone can access any of my reviews of the Navigator (when its vibration was a "hot topic"), they will see that we are very vibration-tolerant. And I know that there was some vibration (though not always excessive) in the halls near the stern, and aft of the laundry room areas on our Voyager cruise. So all I can say is that, for our future Voyager cruises, we will book a suite forward of the laundry room areas. And I too could find no vibration anywhere else on the ship. In fact, other areas were notably vibration-free!
Hope this helps, Richard :) :) :)

WE are booked in suite 644 and our friends in 650 for Voyager Dec 6 cruise. This is their first cruise and I am hoping that our location is a non vibration location. What do you think? Thanks Penny

Penny - I think the "G" midship cabins (which you and your friends have booked) are the best of the standard cabins for location. We've stayed there twice - once in 641 and once in 648. We've also sailed in 877, a stern cabin on the same cruise with Dolebludger. We felt some vibration in 877 on that particular cruise, although not to the same degree that Richard and Carol found. We haven't found either of our midship cabins on deck six to have a vibration problem. Hope that helps! Cheers, Anne

Thanks guys. I think that all suggestions are very well accepted. I will try to book a cabin between 641 and 655. That should be "safe" enough so that minimum vibration will be felt. To tell you the truth, on the Navigator it did not bother me at all when I was falling asleep....it only bothered me when I woke up in the middle of the night and could not fall back to sleep. Muchas gracias, Maurice

I couldn't agree more with the midship G category cabins on Deck 6. We've stayed there twice as well! (I'm beginning to think that between all of us on this board we've probably occupied every Voyager Deck 6 "G" cabin there is!)

I am willing to wager that, if you book one of those midship cabins, you will return and report an unusually vibration free cruise. Other than pretty near the stern, the Voyager has a wonderful ride.
Thanks, Richard :) :) :)

Adrenn- question for you. You were in cabin 641, did the life boats next to this room ( or 642 for that matter) block any of your view from your balcony? I agree with Richard and the rest, that any cabin in the G Cat mid section (641-655) should be vibration free. Thanks again guys Maurice

Maurice, We were in 642 for 11 nights and it was great!! There was no lifeboat obstruction and we'd request that same cabin in a heartbeat!
(Anne is on her way to Hong Kong so may not have a chance to answer you) They were directly across the hall from us on VJ7. I'm sure she'd agree with me.

Dolebludger, my beer friend , and Adrenn (now at sea) your remarks are perfectly well on point. We were on the same VTC cruise together and remember a cocktail party we had on the aft (blunt end) cabin where the vibrations were felt at about 25 knots. We were mid-ships and felt nothing. We left Voyager last Saturday . La Verandah outside vibrated a little, but not inside. We dined with the ship's chief engineer and he stated that it could not be eliminated completely. It is a large ship with engines so one can expect some noise. My neighbour in the cabin next door complained about some creaking in the ceiling. No comment. This is a ship that moves over ocean waves, not a Hilton hotel !!!

Thanks for starting this thread, Maurice. We are getting ready to book a Voyager cruise and I was going to ask the same question.
Thanks, All, for your input on this.

We have sailed twice in Cat H cabins; 664 both times. Did they vibrate; yes. Was it a nuisance; no. I don't think it is too big a deal.
Our next trip is in a Cat H guarantee. We are actually hoping for one of the Cat C stern cabins to get the large balcony. If we do, I will report back. My mother, who had a harder time living with the vibration, has taken one of those wonderful Cat G midship cabins. To each their own.

Marc, because of your reports of your mother's reactions (I was scheduled for her cabin) I moved forward with the grace of the staff. I love the Voyager, and think it is probably my favorite ship just because it is a little larger than the Navigator yet offers the spaciousness in the regular cabins that we can't have on the Mariner, and the restaurants are awesome for variety!
However, I love all the ships, and travel them all for the itinerary! It is like splitting hairs, isn't it?

We were just on the Voyager. We were in 952 and didn't feel any vibration. However, one evening when we went to La Verandah and the ship was vibrating so much that the glasses were shaking on the tables. The ship was sailing in the Atlantic and going at a pretty good clip. I would say, unless you are really sensitive; don't worry about it.

When we talk about vibrations on a ship, we find ouselves in the role of the little boy who "cried wolf" falsely so many times that, when a wolf came, nobody believed him. Here, so many have complained about vibrations, mainly on the Navigator, which many (including me) found to be minor, that it seems that all reports of vibration are suspect. So, when I say that the vibrations in suite 784 on the Voyager were REALLY BAD, folks seem to think that I am over stating the matter. Please belive me, I am not "crying wolf" and am not over stating the matter.
Thanks, Richard :) :) :)

Richard, I think your post was primarily informative...it's just my opinion, but I don't think it is an "unhappy post"...not in the spirit with which Ngaire meant it. I am sure there are many who appreciate the warning! Sheri

Richard, I started this post and do not want to "beat it to death". I think all the info is informative so much so that I have already booked a G Cat suite (642) and feel that I owe you all a bit of gratitude in solving this problem. BTW, you have made your point up front and we are all the better for it. Thanks No need to apologize to anyone or continue defending yourself. "Nuf said, ready Ted, take what you got and move ahead"

From reading all the posts about the vibrating cabins, we opted to play it safe and book cabin 645 on the Voyager, we were on a guarantee, but decited not to chance it. We were on the Voyager thru the Panama Canal last year on deck nine, (I don't remember the cabin number), but my husband noticed the vibration more than I did, I think the sleeping pills must help. We spent 27 days on the Navigator 2 years ago, and we were mid-ship , deck 8, our cabin was great... Thanks for all the help.... ;)

Dolebludger, Don't apologize. I also felt the vibration. We were in 667. Couldn't sleep most nights. The fact that some people are not bothered by it doesn't mean that the vibration is not real.

We had a cabin near the rear and I felt the vibrations. Did not bother my wife. We had dinner with the chief engineer and he said Radisson is trying to figure out what to do about it. They hit something a long time ago and a company said they could fix it so they dry docked and gave them the chance. No improvement. So they dry docked again and did more stuff. Fluid dynamics is not well enough understood for them to model what to do to the prop.
I think it comes down to bothering some people more than others, which means you won't know what you think until your there. Most of the time it is just noticable, but if the seas are just right its very noticable. Again, my wife never noticed.

Well, the only reason I apoligized is that I was only actually in two suites -- our 784 and 970 --and there the vibration (no, shaking) was hideous last April, and we believe the oft-reported Navigator situation is minor by comparisson! On the other hand, others have said their suites on or near the stern of the Voyager on the same cruise had only a minor vibration (or shaking) problem, and I believe their reports are credible. I have had the experience of trying to track down and fix vibration problems in automobiles enough to know that it is not a simple condition to define. With an automobile, the vibration can and will seem to move about with variations in speed and road conditions. I'm sure it is the same with ships. Then, there is the fact that all mechanical devices (ships included) will, by their nature, have some vibrations at some times. For example, a few hours ago, I drove a firmly-suspended sports car to Okla. City from Dallas. About 20 miles of the road were concrete with tar strips. I was doing about 85, and the car was going "bump bump bump bump" until the paving changed. If I didn't know what was going on, I might have said "something is wrong with this car -- the vibration is awful!" But I knew the situation. When we hit smooth asphault, the ride was smooth as silk.
I think we all are aware that there is something wrong with the propulsion pods on the Voyager. Whether this results in a problem for folks in any of the suites near the stern hinges on a number of factors, such as ship's speed and sea conditions.
But I won't apologize for saying this: there is a problem back there.
Thanks, Richard :) :) :)

We had 664 on our last Voyage and felt a mild vibration that we thought was comforting. On the Diamond, in 712, the vibration is irritating.
So you see, it's not that I'm insensitive to vibrations. I think the 664 cabin may be forward enough to miss anything dramatic.

We disembarked SSVoyager on 9/7. Had a horizon category cabin, #1056. We did notice some mild vibration, mostly in the evenings---perhaps when we were under full speed. It was mild & non-disturbing. I read on a post here or elsewhere that the ship was soon to repair prop damage suffered earlier in summer season. The suggestion was that the vibration was due to this damage. I wouldn't hesitate to book this cabin again & loved glancing out at the wake...we kept our drapes opn to thoroughly enjoy it.
