I think Jane Brody's health columns in the NYT are usually excellent. Today there is one on flying healthy that I thought was worth pointing to on LCT. Flying Healthy

Good article, Eugene. I would add Zicam to that regimen, I haven't had a cold in 3 years and I would always get sick after a flight!
I use the Zicam that you place in your nose right before a flight.

We have been using Neosporin placed in the nose for a few years now, and neither one of us has gotten sick after any flight.

It's not a good idea to use neosporin or any other petroleum based product in your nose. Chemical pneumonia can result. If the neosporin is water based it's probably OK. The biggest threat is from viruses and the usual precautions apply...wash you hands frequently and don't touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Planes are just one big petri dish in my opinion!

Hi all. We went to a physician who was a travel medicine specialist. He actually suggested using Neosynephrine at takeoff and just before landing on long flights. Perhaps you meant Neosynephrine, not Neosporine which is an antibiotic?
The Neosynephrine should not be the long acting kind, but the regular original version. It has been a godsend to me because I always got sinus infections from flights. Using this has made a huge difference for me and I'm so greatful to this physician.

Except that neosynephrine is, I believe, not recommended if you have high blood pressure, right? And it could interact with other medications you might be taking.

I still swear by the old "wipe down the armrests with Purell mentality" as well a wee dab under my nose.....sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't cheer

I'm with Karen on the Zicam front. Purell under the nose? Doesn't that burn like heck?

Holding your breath for the flight is another nifty trick! If you have sinus/nasal problems, using Afrin or neo-synephrine just before flying to prevent problems clearing your snuises due to reduced pressure in the cabin (something the new Dreamliner should avoid) is a good idea unless you have poorly controlled BP or ryhthm problems. I recommend Zicam/Cold-eze/Airborne all the time at the first sign of a cold-not harmful and may be helpful.

Interesting article. I need all the help I can get! Time and again I come down with a cold after flying. I've used Airborne with success and then without success. Anyway, thanks for the link and recommendations. Lots to consider.
