By a fluke, I just found out that since Tom hasn't had any activity with USAir in the past 36 months that his 98,000 miles will expire in the first quarter of 2006. There's lots of ways to protect these now that we know (restaurant, florist, car rental partners etc)

If you haven't had activity for 36 months with USAir, do something quick or yours too could expire soon!

Thanks, Marcie.

I know Todd's had some activity on his account(business trips), but I think I might be in the same boat as Tom.

I'm definitely going to check it out.

I just saw that too. I went ahead and applied my short USAir flight this past week to my USAir account, rather than United as usual, to save the existing miles.

All we're doing is eating at a local restaurant that gives f.f. miles and that counts as activity!

This is from their website:
Mileage Expiration Policy
Miles earned in the Dividend Miles program do not expire as long as the member has any type of qualifying account activity within the past 36-month period.

Mileage Expiration Policy Update: If you have not had any account activity (miles deposited or debited) in the past 36 months, your Dividend Miles will expire in the first quarter of 2006. Miles earned in the Dividend Miles program do not expire as long as the member has any type of qualifying account activity during a 36-month period. If you haven’t had any activity in that time period, your miles will be subject to expiration. So, start earning miles again on US Airways or use any of our partners worldwide to retain your miles. You can even earn miles by purchasing flowers, staying in hotels, renting cars or in many other ways with our Dividend Miles Partners

I signed up for their dining out program as soon as I read your email. Not many restuarants close to my house, but Tuesday it will be take out BBQ & I should be OK. US Air is not big in Houston, but I will do whatever it takes not to lose a ff ticket. Thanks for the heads up, Marcie.

I just read this on the Continenal Air website...another program where miles can expire!

Inactive Membership

If no mileage is deposited in your account for 18 consecutive months, commencing after June 1, 2001, your membership will be cancelled, and your miles may be forfeited. To keep your account active, you can earn mileage with a variety of airline, non-travel and shopping partners. Please visit the Earn Miles section of this site for a full list of earnings partners.

Same thing for American but that's 36 months before they expire. Good thing you raised this, Marcie. Cheers, Anne

Most mileage accounts have expiration dates. They all vary. Amex Membership rewards is one that miles don't expire. Even some accounts that are active can have miles expire. You really have to read the fine print and stay updated.

According to Marcie's post of Continental's rules, I guess I don't have a Continental account anymore. :( Onepass was my first ff account. Started with New York Air and People's Express. I sure enjoyed Continental First Class on the DC-10s and Eastern to the Caribbean. I guess I need to start over.

Most airlines do expire their miles after 3 yrs of no activity - exception being Northwest and despite what is posted above Continental.

I use my USair Dividend mile credit card a lot. Do those miles count or does it have to be a ticket or partner purchase? I am not worried about it much as we just flew on US air last month.

Any activity on your account usually extends expiration date (if there is one). The Bank of America (soon to change) USAirways Visa definitely works - I use one regularly but haven't actually flown or had any other mileage credited to my US account in several years - only other activity on the account was an award issued last year for a trip in March to Bangkok on Lufthansa in First :)
