Anyone have any ideas for tours or great guides in Florence? My nephew is very interested in architecture. Their family vacation this year will include Florence and Venice (He's already been to Rome). I've recommended Walks In Venice to them, but has anyone found a similar terrific service in Florence?
Thanks,
Kathy

Hi Kathy, I remember referring Walks Inside Venice to you some time ago. They were wonderful. As for Florence, my suggestion would be to refer to Rick Steves Guides. He recommends fantastic guides and should have some recommdations for Florence. Another option is to write Rick Steves and inquire. I've gotten great responses to inquiries in the past from his staff: http://www.ricksteves.com/about/contact.htm I've also gotten some great assistance from Slow Travel Talk's Italy message boards. Very helpful and knowlegeable people: http://slowtalk.com/groupee/forums/a/frm/f/862600685 I hope you're successful in finding out the information he needs. Florence is fabulous!

One thing I learned on my Tauck Tour of Italy was that guides in Italy must be licensed. They pass some vigorous exams regarding History, Architecture, Art, etc. Most will be able to customize the tour and point out what you would want to see. Florence is very walkable and actually they do not allow passenger cars into the city center. Cars must have a special permit to enter that part of the city where you would tour.

I really liked that aspect of our Italian guides, Kathy. They were all very knowledgeable, because they were educated and licensed.
One thing you neglected to mention is to beware of the mopeds that will mow you down if you're not watching!

Thanks Denise and Kathy.
I've pasted into Word and forwarded the ideas along.
