There is a posting on another cruise board that
Silversea has been adding to your bill a dollar a day per person for a charity that they support.

Does it sound a little strange that a cruise line would do this or am I just not with the program.

The posting said that you can have the charge removed by going to the front desk and making the request.

I wonder what the charity is?

The charity is The Maruzza Lefebvre D'Ovidio Foundation It is a family charity run by the family who runs Silversea.

Yes, sounds a bit presumptive, if not strange to me. Not that much money, but could ruffle some independent feathers who don't like that it is opt out only.

It is added to your final bill, but you can ask to have it removed if you don't want to participate and they'll do it. They do tell you in your cruise docs that they are going to do it.

We just returned from a Silver Spirit cruise and this donation was not added to our bill (I just checked), although I did read about the charity in one of the daily Chronicles delivered to our suite.

The thread about this on the Cruise Critic Silversea board has become very interesting, and now includes a response from management.

Personally, I think that this new policy is generating a tremendous amount of ill will and setting a very bad precedent.

I've seen this at various hotels and resorts in the past. I ALWAYS make them take it off... especially if they don't ask first and just "presume" I want to participate. I know $1 isn't much (one time at a resort it was $5) but I don't want to donate to a cause I am not familar with, haven't researched or might not want to support. I REALLY find it disagreeable when I read later in the press or on a webiste how much thsy have donated to charity.....they didn't donate it, thier customers did!

Wow, that's causing quite a flap on the SS board at Cruise Critic. Poor guy from corporate just had to tout the company line. It did not react at all to the irritation this issue had generated on the thread.
