We seem to have quite a few smokers on the board and even though it's a bad habit, I would love if we could compose a list of current airport smoking policies.

I will start with some domestic airports, I have not been to an international airport for 2 years so maybe someone with more recent experience can help.

Pittsburgh PIT Smoking permitted in restaurant smoking sections

Charlotte CLT Smoking permitted in restaurant smoking sections

Cleveland CLE Convenient outdoor smoking areas that are cement walled but roofless. Not so convenient during a snow storm :)

Atlanta ATL Convenient but smokey closed in smoking rooms with POOR ventilation. One doesn't need to light up, just enter and breath in

Fort Lauderdale FLL No smoking after security check point

San Juan SJU No smoking after security check point

St. Louis - little smoking rooms.
BWI Baltimore, smoking in one bar pre-security gate, none past security.
DFW Dallas - none
Chicago O'Hare - none that I know of...
Minneapolis - none

LAX actually has a few outdoor places depending on the terminal. Easier then schlepping out to the drop off place thru security every time. Much of the drop off is non smoking but it is rarely enforced.

I didn't know that. I came through customs and was out the door waiting to be picked. There are certain bars in Denver that you can smoke in, but it has been a few years.

Since 911 I drive when I can can. More freedom plus I like the alone time. In Calf. all the motels are non smoking so I try to find one with a balcony

Looks like smoking will be a no-no at our local beaches (Santa Monica). Personally, I pack out what I pack in but I am in the minority. Cig butts are the number 1 item picked up by the sand sifter trucks.
Oh well...

BTV Burlington VT has a small smoking area out front. None inside or past security in case any of you are in the neighborhood.

Designated smoking areas curbside on both levels. Nothing indoors, nothing past security.

Reno[RNO] - Bar before security where you need to buy something (each of the two terminals had a smoking room but were turned into retail space) but outside is quick and easy.

Phoenix - smoking section in one bar per terminal, you need to buy something (I have never figured out how to get out of the terminals)

Sacramento - Security to outside is maybe 60 feet and a staircase, very user friendly

Salt Lake City - rooms in each terminal where you didn't need to light up a cigarette (not sure if they still have them though)

DFW - is convenient to the outside (air feels good after being in the plane so long)

IAH (Houston) - Smoking "lounges" at garage entrances on concourse levels, security right there, quick to get through.

FLL - outside only and the porters on power trips will tell you to move on.

Lima, Peru - outside but convenient

In 2000 - Stockholm had an area, but didn't see one in Amsterdam - but I was so tired already & wanted to use my strength to look at as many shops as possible. That airport has a ton of shops. BTW - the Tumi shop is only about a 20% discount.
IAH (Houston) - only outside. I am not familiar with the area Mary Ellen is talking about, but it is my home airport so once I check in, I'm off to the plane.
Atlanta's is truely the worst. Haven't they heard of air filtration there?
Lousivlle (KY) has smoking areas - but then it is the US home of Brown & Williamson.
Newark has places where you can go outside & I don't think you have to go through security. Not sure about the security thing.
Cincinnati used to have a smoking room like Atlanta's - really bad - but I think once they remodeled it disappeared.

I forgot to mention - for all you REALLY intrepid travellers...
Thule Air Base, Greenland   - smoking lounge inside the terminal, in my office, in the bar/lounge, on the beach, in the boy's room...
No smoking in the Base Commander's office if you know what's good for you .

Robert, you're right, on any other board, folks would start their anti-smoking rant.

It's very nice that we all know each other and can share informtion with our smoking friends!

Karen; Madrid has several areas where smoking is permitted. Tenerife does not permit smoking in the terminal. Cape Town is no smoking in the terminal. Calgary has a smoking room in each terminal wing. The Hong Kong smoking rooms are REALLY smokey. Papeete is a mystery. There really aren't any signs. I smoked and nobody said anything. I think the smoking policy in PHX must have changed. I don't know of anywhere in the terminals that you can smoke. Didn't see any smoking areas at JFK. Going to be flying out of Nice and Heathrow next month and will let you know about those.

2 years ago I know (as a smoker) that London Heathrow, London Gatwick, and Dublin airports all had smoking restaurant/bars....and they were not enclosed in glass or separated from the rest of the areas in the terminals. Just big, open, smoking allowed (practically encouraged) bars. In fact, I distinctly remember being amused in Gatwick airport, having a coffee and a cigarette in their "McDonalds". Honest! It was reminiscent of the old days here in North America!

All of these were available after check in/security. I don't know if this has changed in 24 months or not?

Vancouver BC International Terminal for US Flights has a small, very smokey, smoking room after you pass thru security but a long ways from the gates.

PHX has a smoking room in Terminal 2 after security check point. It's hidden around a corner, Dougburns. Terminal 4 International Concourse, British Airways has a smoking area. There also are some bars in the terminals which have very small smoking sections. (I just verified this info with our Terminal Services manager)

About a year ago, I flew Lufthansa & had to switch in Germany - can't remember the airport. It might have been Munich

There was a smoking area - not enclosed. had a couple of chairs & counters.
The smoke escaped, but everyone seemed good about staying in the allowed area

I can add ....
JFK None-outside only

LAX- Atrium past security shared by terminals 2 (Northwest, Air Canada, Canadian Airlines) & terminal 3 (Alaska, Frontier,Spirit, American Airlines (only the routes they took over when they bought Reno Air and TWA),
Also one in terminal 7 (United Air)
All other LAX terminals-nothing

San Jose-None-outside only
San Francisco-None-outside only
John Wayne-None-outside only

This really is one of my pet peeves when you need to go out of security to have a quick puff before boarding then go back through security again. It just adds to the congestion and boggs the line down. It would sure make it easier for everyone if there was a small atrium on the OTHER side of security....especially if you have a tight connection as we've had on International flights through O'Hare and JFK.

You can no longer smoke in the Rome, Italy airport as I discovered last fall. However, if you ever happen to be in the Savannah, Georgia airport you can smoke in the restaurants and enjoy southern hospitality.

Now, isn't this more civilized? It sure is nice that we can have a discussion like this without a bunch of name calling. You could never have this discussion on CC without hackles being raised. Great news about Heathrow. I'm sure I'll need a smoke there before the flight to LAX.

Doug...we too have a non-stop from Heathrow to LAX so I can relate!!!

In November '03 Denver had a bar upstairs where you can smoke as long as you buy something (bottled water and coffee count)

Ft. Lauderdale-none outside only

Robert;
Vegas, as of last week still had the little rooms with slots. Bars still have smoking in them, at least the one for SW Air.

Edinburgh has a few designated areas and they are darn strict about it. Copenhagen has designated areas. Stockholm you could smoke in bars if I recall correctly.

Kansas city is only outside - pretty convenient.

Memphis is outside only, and it can be a looooong walk to the gates from there. They have signs that tell you to move 20 feet from any door, but I haven't really seen that one enforced.

Salt Lake City used to have a room in each concourse, but I haven't flown through there in years so I can't swear they are still there.

Thanks Marc!! Wouldn't you know it...no one has mentioned anything about O'Hare?? Anyone know? We're on AA into O'Hare then Swiss Air on to Zurich.

Karen, maybe this thread could be moved somewhere it can be easily accessed.

Marcie, I have only ran thru O'hare with no time to stop to smoke so I can't give you a first hand experience but I found this at a smoking forum (smoking forum????)

Other than outside, past security,

The Admirals Club in T3 has a smoking lounge as does the Flagship
Lounge at the end of H concourse. Membership required for the first
(or a BC ticket) or a FC (or Exec Plat) ticket for the second.

Thanks Karen! That is helpful. I hope BC means Business Class?? We're 1st class from John Wayne to O'Hare than Business class from O'Hare to Zurich. Do we qualify? Do they consider the class you arrive on or the class you're getting ready to board?(maybe Peter, Marc, Lawrence or some of the business travelers or AA frequent flyers know about this?) Hopa, Hopa, Hopa!
