There have been many posts on this subject, but I never bought in surance other than from RSSC. We would like to buy travel insurance to cover our next cruise in May on Silversea. Which is currently the lowest rate company for over 65's ?

Anybody know if it's possible to get just trip cancellation insurance? I've been buying the RSSC offering as well, but wonder if I can find one without travel medical, since I'm already covered for that through my office. I have to choose something when I pay for WAVE in March.

We have also bought through Insure My Trip on the internet as well as RSSC. We have never found one that only covers cancellation. All of the policies seem to have you collect on your own medical insurance first and they are the secondary carrier. At our age we never travel without it.

In all the research I have done I have never found an insurer that covers just trip cancellation. Really the real cost is the trip cancellation that is what is claimed the most, they just "throw" in the medical coverage in reality. You can buy JUST the medical coverage and it is so cheap that even if you could buy just cancellation the cost would probably be the same.
I checked out a bunch of insurers and overall liked CSA the best. They have a plan you can buy at the time of final payment and cover pre-existing conditions where most plans made you buy within in certain number of day or weeks of deposit.
They also have a cheaper plan that does not cover pre-existing conditions.
This is the coverage graywolf had when she had her heart attack and she said they were wonderful. So I would check that company out, nice to know they handled a serious claim so well. It is "secondary" coverage you claim on your own medical first.
Travelex is one of the few that is "primary" coverage claim straight to them for any medical problems.

Thanks Ngaire. I called CSA and their premium is $1137 for both of us. !!! They would not split off the medical portion. We more than enough medical insurance to cover any possibility. What we need is insurance to cover the cruise and the air in case either one of us becomes ill and unable to travel. On our last cruise with SS we paid about $350 for insurance. What could that have been for ?

A question I have, does the price of the insurance change with how much time there is left til your cruise? What I mean is, is the price the same if you buy the insurance now with the cruise still many months away as compared to buying it when final payment is due?
I always wait til final payment is due to purchase my insurance. I just checked insurance rates for MUSH and it seems like lots less than when I bought insurance for 007. Both cruises are about the same price.

Karen, why is there a need to buy it before final payment is due? Isn't it fully refundable til then and then penalties kick in? I don't think insurance premium is ever refundable once you pay for it.

We usually use Access America and you get the pre-existing conditions waived if you purchase the insurance within 2 weeks of deposit. Marilyn

Price the same no matter when you purchase it before the cruise.
Almost all insurers will waive the pre-existing condition clause if you buy from one week to three weeks from deposit. Most insurances are non refundable, some are transferable.
The thing I like about CSA is that you dont have to buy it early to cover pre-existing so you dont risk that money for the insurance like you have to with the other insurers.
Neville I dont know but I think you must be talking about the reassurance policy that Silversea offers. This is not a regular insurance "where you get your money back" but an insurance where if you cancel within 14 days of the cruise you can get a cruise credit for the amount to use at another time. It is not the same thing at all as a regular insurance policy where you get a refund of your money.
The "medical" coverage is simply peanuts in the cost of the policy. The big cost of the insurance is all about cancellation refunds. Even if you found one without medical coverage (dont know of any insurance like this) the difference in premium would be almost nothing.

Ngaire, I checked CSA and find that there is a $40,000 limit to the trip cost. They seem to be fairly comparable to RSSC as far as % of cruise cost.
